Over the past 10 years, I've had 4 HP laptops at home. Other than a cracked screen on the oldest (sustained when I accidentally dropped my computer bag on the train platform), I've had no problems with any of them. In fairness, I always perform a major upgrade of the O/S (e.g. WinXP to Win7 to Win10) by performing a clean install.

It is a hp pavilion p6, bought in 2014. It works like a charm. I have windows 10. One of the last update that comes with Windows Update brings a black screen after startup - this seems to be a very common problem by hp, a quick Google "hp black screen with mouse" brings ton of results - and of HW-depending answers. It is more than 2 years old, so no warranty. hp does not support it anymore. I bought it (new) online, so no way to get support from the vendor no-phone-number-and-it-is-so-simple-to-ignore-email-requests.jpg So now I am stuck. There will be no driver update on hp side to cope with the windows update. I have no trivial way to keep my PC from being updated -> In win 10, you can either deactivate windows updates completely, which is unsafe, or wait for the update to be installed to desinstall them. Which means wait for the black screen occurence to happen, go in safe mode, launch recovery, etc... I know how this will end : I will have to buy a new machine. In what twisted world are we living ...? :~

That is pretty much what I do, but the update keeps installing and there is no way to prevent it.

That's not really a Micro$haft problem - my computer is older than that (or at least the MB and processor are, the Video card and HDD are not what it came with) and has no problem with updated drivers. Two years old? HP's problem - yell at them to make you feel better, and try replacing the video with an "off board" video and new drivers. It may fix your problem and make your computer feel faster. Like me, you probably have a couple of old spares kicking around. :laugh:

This would be feasible, if everybody else jumped on the bandwagon. Being the only one working with linux in a world of windows is just asking for troubles.

Well, looks like thats the only way. And then take backup, I like Macrium backup, then you can go back to whatever stable snapshot you like.

Hey, yours is new! My newest are circa 2008. But no way am I going to put Win 10 on either of them.

You can just install an older version no of Windows 10 (Fresh) and pick up what drivers HP offers (HP Auto Detect)

Does the mouse pointer display? If so, can you wander around the screen and see it change to the text-input cursor in one place near the center? If so, does the screen work if you sleep the laptop and then wake it back up again? If you answered yes to all that.. there may be a workaround -- basically, you teach the computer to reset the video right after it boots.

Try unintalling the drivers from HP and install the default drivers from Microsoft instead, usually does wonders for the stability.

I know, I never went into this because of the cost - I'd need 2To or 4To, which is not that much but not so inexpensive anymore - and because of active procrastination. The backup is not really the PITA part, it is more the SW reinstalling stuff. For instance, I am using Money for personal finance, and installing it on Win7+ and get it to work properly is not easy.

With more and more web-based applications it becomes less and less noticeable. "My place", for example: A Win7 shop, but few if (any new) applications are not accessed via a browser. I will admit that one notable exception, of sorts, will only run under IE. Everyone here has FoxPro installed. So - given a desktop with links to applications, who'd know about the upgrade?

Take a deep breath, sigh, set up your stack of disks, and start the process. After a few hours you will be done, and back in business.

Don't buy HP. Just.. don't. I stopped counting the amount of HP related desktop and laptop problems I've seen over the years. The oddest one was a laptop with a modified Windows 8 install image on it with less drivers than the stock Windows 8 image. As a result, it had no Ethernet and no Wi-Fi out-of-the box. On the plus side, it was priced pretty cheap and the MB broke in the last month of warranty. :thumbsup:

If all else fails, you might consider running W10 in a virtual machine. Doesn't matter what host, W7 or even Linux. VMware's player is free and there are others. If you get your machine running, you can run (free) tools to create a VM from it, which precludes reinstalling programs. Don't know about reactivating stuff, if you clone the MAC address that satisfies a lot. I run W10 under Linux and it runs fine and (most of the time) updates are OK. Unlike 100's of millions of other users, I have to fiddle with it after some updates. :) Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons & tomatoes. Really just one big round crouton covered with tomato sauce. And cheese. FINE, it was a pizza. I ate a pizza. Lou

Depending on what the PC is used for, Linux may be an option. For development work? Nope. But for general purposes (email, browsing, etc.) it may work just fine.
