So a young friend of mine, currently out of work with rent and car finance to pay is currently in the process of applying for Flu Camp [^] (he's registered his interest and is currently awaiting medical results to see if he is suitable). If his application is successful, he will be placed in a house in London for two weeks, injected with the flu virus, subjected to experimental drugs and monitored. For his troubles he will be given just short of £4K + free board. So my question is, would you consider doing this? For the purpose of this theoretical question imagine you are still getting paid from your regular job - like paid holiday without losing any holiday allocation - so in affect you're getting 4K on top of your regular salary. I got to admit I would consider it.

£4k - indisputably nice! 'Flu - bearable at a push - it's horrible but you tend to be unconscious for most of it. Two weeks in London? Leave it aht! You're 'avin' a bleedin' girarffe, incha??

It's a toss-up as to which would be worse: two weeks of flu or two weeks in London....

If it is experimental, than not all effects will be mapped, and long-term effects might be even more unclear. I would not consider that gamble for a lousy 4000 pounds. Then again, I need not even apply; I'm already taking a lot of medication and that might interact with other stuff in an unpredictable way.

Found this: [^] If the numbers are correct, then dying from catching the flu is a lot more likely than winning the lottery. I guess chances of dying are even worse when dealing with experimental crap. I'd tell them to f#!k off and try it on themselves, not matter what sum they pay.

London. Flu you know you will get over fairly quickly, but London leaves deep scars... (Plus, it takes weeks to get the black crud out of your nose after a single day visit ...)

If you have the flu, you generally have no working taste buds anyway, so you might as well be eating hospital food.

I wouldn't - especially not after that case a few years back where some men in the UK almost paid with their lives in one of these new drug trials. BBC - The Drug Trial: Emergency At The Hospital - Media Centre[^]

I remember a case from a few years ago where some guys turned into a vegetable, and one of them even died, after such an experimental drug turned out to cause brain damage. Some money is nice, a lot of money is nicer, but being in good health is priceless. I'd consider it if I really needed the money, but at the moment €4000,- is just a nice extra :)

Nope. I live in the neighborhood. I'd consider it only if taking place in California, Iceland, Hawaii, or generally someplace with a nice beach hospital and a paid plane ticket. Surfer blondes and hot nurses would be a bonus.

At least they're offering more than the plague pushers on this side of the pond. X| A few years ago my younger brother mentioned that he'd considered signing up for a similar trial but that as appealing as $1k for a week was decided to pass. He was less than amused when I responded that getting paid more than that every week without being deliberately exposed to a plague was even nicer.

When medicines are tested on humans they are fairly safe (at least in the EU) so I could consider it.

No. For so many reasons, I could not possibly list them all here. To pick one random reason: experimental medicines, which could be more harmful than the flu, if not fatal to some; and I would not want to be a member of the group "some".
