So a young friend of mine, currently out of work with rent and car finance to pay is currently in the process of applying for Flu Camp [^] (he's registered his interest and is currently awaiting medical results to see if he is suitable). If his application is successful, he will be placed in a house in London for two weeks, injected with the flu virus, subjected to experimental drugs and monitored. For his troubles he will be given just short of £4K + free board. So my question is, would you consider doing this? For the purpose of this theoretical question imagine you are still getting paid from your regular job - like paid holiday without losing any holiday allocation - so in affect you're getting 4K on top of your regular salary. I got to admit I would consider it.

I remember a case from a few years ago where some guys turned into a vegetable, and one of them even died, after such an experimental drug turned out to cause brain damage. Some money is nice, a lot of money is nicer, but being in good health is priceless. I'd consider it if I really needed the money, but at the moment €4000,- is just a nice extra :)

Nope. I live in the neighborhood. I'd consider it only if taking place in California, Iceland, Hawaii, or generally someplace with a nice beach hospital and a paid plane ticket. Surfer blondes and hot nurses would be a bonus.

At least they're offering more than the plague pushers on this side of the pond. X| A few years ago my younger brother mentioned that he'd considered signing up for a similar trial but that as appealing as $1k for a week was decided to pass. He was less than amused when I responded that getting paid more than that every week without being deliberately exposed to a plague was even nicer. :trollface:

When medicines are tested on humans they are fairly safe (at least in the EU) so I could consider it.

Prednison is regular medication that is still prescribed, but that doesn't mean that you can take it for long without negative effects. One of the results is osteoporosis - that doesn't make it "bad" medicine, it just means that you don't take if there's no compelling reason to do so. Another example would be Puri-Nethol; yes, it is safe, as long as you don't plan on having children. That's side-effects from regular medication that is already "tested and safe". You're talking about something that isn't "that tested and safe", otherwise the testing would not even be required.
