TV Advice

The wife is making noises like she wants to get a new TV. We already have a 65-inch Sharp Aquos LED TV that's six-seven years old, and she wants a 75-inch. We've eliminated the QLED sets because they're way too expensive, but have established that we want HDR. With that info, can anyone here comment of their own TV in that same class (75-inch with HDR)? I honestly have no idea which brand is decent anymore. BTW, we're buying ceiling is hard-set at $2500. ------------- I forgot to mention that we run all of our stuff through a home theater receiver with 5.1 speakers, and have a separate DVD player, cable box, and media center PC devices. The PC is connected to the network/internet. We don't really need a "smart" TV because we have the PC. The sound quality and "smartness" durability of the TV itself is kinda moot because of the above. We'll be treating it like a glorified monitor.

I recently picked up a 65-inch Sony Bravia, 4K, HDR, etc., and am very pleased with it. Their 75-inch are under your hard ceiling price.

Good features, good picture, and good connectivity (although you need a soundbar; as with all "thin" TV's the speakers are crap).

They stop updating the OS after 3-ish years so unless you have an external smart device like Roku, the smartness of your TV is limited to about 3 years.

I prefer to use the intelligence of a DVD player and let the TV be a "dumb" monitor. That's because of how my various audio sources are connected with the receiver. Plus, if the DVD player is out of date I can replace it easily and inexpensively.
Yeah, that works, especially if the DVD player has apps for YouTube, Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, etc.

Currently at my mother-in-law's house; added Hulu and Amazon to her Wii. And, watching DS9 via Hulu... as long as it works, I'm happy.

AFAIK with 2500$ you might get a nice one. I personally am very happy with my Samsung from 2013, used "un-smart" (laptop pluged to TV as smart part)

I agree strongly with this. Newest TV I have includes 'smart' and I find it irritating and useless. And that with a new TV. The interface it intended to up sell products like pay for movies and consequently makes it harder to get to the content that I am already paying for. With external devices I can always switch to something else.

I guess it has to do with growing up with B&W TV, but, no matter how big the screen, there's precious little worth watching, let alone SuperSizing an extra-extra large.

I have never seen it spelled - only heard it said, and I have always heard it said, "beamer." That's just me and my sheltered, west coast upbringing though.
