Well, Mr. Slacker did not want to win more than he needed. :-D

I also do not want to win more than I need, but my needs are *very great*!

Yup, 22 people - that increases our odds of winning from infinitesimal to slightly, vaguely, mostly improbable. :)

I wouldn't mind winning it all and seeing how much I really needed.

I think this is one of the most realistic (and primary) reasons that I have heard on why people buy lottery tickets (knowing they will most like not win). More or less, I have the same feeling about it. Now my brother made a big mistake year's ago. He plays the same numbers, and has for years. He "has" to buy a ticket now, because if his winning numbers came up, and he didn't play, he said he would have to dance in on-coming rush hour traffic. yikes!

Yeah, same numbers mean it's for life. Else there's always that risk there :-)

What the heck would I do with that much money? Just give me a million, I'll be fine.

If you think 'goto' is evil, try writing an Assembly program without JMP.

You could donate the rest of it to various charities around the world. Or even start your own charity. There are places where children younger than 5 don't get 200 calories a day.

I'm guessing the odds of winning are about the same as the odds of them accidentally sending me the check... so why bother buying a ticket?

Imagine how much money charities would have if, instead of spending the money to buy a lottery ticket, they just gave it straight to their favorite charity. There would be no taxes involved, either.

Most people who spend on lottery tickets are poor, so it's unlikely they'd donate to a charity.

Tell ya what: As a Canadian, I don't think I'm allowed to get a Powerball ticket...however, there's nothing that prevents you from getting one (or a few), and if you win, keep what you'd like (I won't even put a figure on it), and give the rest of it to me. Deal?

I think the cash value is only 320 million and after fed and state taxes, you may get only 195 million. So yeah, I'd say go for it.

The idiot in me likes to think that if I won, it would be an immediate injection of cash into the country's coffers on my account. While I hate being without the money, I love paying tax and thinking of all the good my contribution might possibly be doing. The way I choose to look at it - my money is 100% efficient and is the money that is actually doing fantastic stuff. It's all the other poor buggers that are paying for bureaucratic stuff-ups and waste. I try to save realism for when it matters. ;)
