… let me tell you a, if not the, major component of what’s needed to solve Americas gun problems, and a few others elsewhere. (This problem just manifests itself more violently in the USA because they have the guns.) It’s not an overnight solution, because there isn’t one. It will take time. And it’s not about gun control. It’s about parenting. Start doing it. There has been a generation (and some) of kids brought up with, to all intents and purposes, no parenting. The fad nowadays is bringing up baby in a "hands-off" manner – don’t interfere with the little darling’s development, and let them find their own true selves free from interference…. It’s bollocks. Start off by teaching it in schools, as a compulsory subject alongside the 3 R’s, and ensure that the next generation of parents understands that they need to be proper parents to their children. I won’t waste time here going into what "proper parenting" is, I’m sure most of you have your own ideas anyway, except to say that it isn’t leaving your kids to bring themselves up. Children are not "little adults", they are children. Perhaps then we'll end up with fewer people growing up angry, with no self-control or empathy or understanding of the world.

I'm not sure how it is outside of the US, but in the US there are not that many homes (percentage wise) where there is a stay at home mom. Parents are offloading the raising of their children to day cares. So, we cannot complain about misbehaving children when we are not even willing to raise them. I know some of you will read a lot more into this and get offended, and if so, don't bother replying.

There are a lot of people not parenting - instead being very selfish with their time, while expecting day-care, school, and electronic devices to take care of their kids. However, I expect the parents to teach the kids to be parents! That is parenting, and part of guiding a child into adulthood.

But the parents are gun toting lunatics. It probably IS parenting that is the cause.

Just read somewhere (can't find it) that 6 of the last 7 US school shootings were done by kids from single parent households. Is that a coincidence? Relevant or Irrelevant? Is anybody even willing to look at that though? Best remedy I have heard is the one that said - Go make friends with the loner in your school or office - because people are unlikely to shoot up a place where their friends are. But of course that solution doesn't involve some big government "do-something" program, and requires effort on every ones part so it will never fly.

I'm pretty sure I would not like to live in a world in which I would never be offended. I am absolutely certain I don't want to live in a world in which you would never be offended. Freedom doesn't mean the absence of things you don't like. Dave

Oh dear... I always have to pull out the quote from Socrates when some older wise person starts having a go at young people: “The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.”(Socrates circa 400BC) It's as though some people were never young, it's boring and unimaginative to criticise the young for being young.

“That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”

Yes, you're not the first, and I am well aware of that quote, and similar. It's also used as a get-out-of-jail card by anyone not wishing to really think about things.

It's not a question of not understanding the youth of today, it's a question of how we raise our children, and it's boring and unimaginative to dismiss any criticism with that old quote from Socrates. There is a trend towards laissez-faire parenting, and I think it's wrong - I certainly don't think it's wrong to question it.

Yep. Nothing like the good ol' days when a white fellar could kick the hell out of the wife, beat the kids with a nice hefty branch from the tree in the backyard, then trundle off down to the bar where he could get liquored up, stop off to see the mistress and then join the local police for a late nice shit kickin' on the newest minority to move into town. Just to keep them in their place of course. And if he or the police got too liquored up to safely drive home then the other friendly police would look the other way as the careened down the street back to the 'castle'. Sigh..memories...
