Heard that phrase on the radio this morning and it occurred to me, if you're insane, how can you plead not guilty using "reason"? Seems rather contradictory to me! ;P

Having said that, it would have been clearer to just say 'because' rather than 'by reason of'. :doh: The hilarity simply emerges from the convoluted ways of expressing stuff in legalese.:~

Actually something I mull over now and then. For a lot of criminal acts, you's have to be insane to even try them (various reasons). As an example, killing someone for their sneakers. Animal cruelty is another. On that basis, it really is a guilty plea. OK - so we won't send you to prison, but since you're that crazy, we'll never let you out on the streets again. Much to dangerous and unpredictable. Case closed !
