Sleeping On Foam
-
Most of the "Memory foam" manufacturers seem to do a 60 / 100 day free trial - if you don't get on with it, you can return it: it may be worth trying one of those (though I suspect getting it back in the box may be ... um ... interesting). There may be "in original condition" caveats on it, so if you or your SO are prone to night sweating ... My feeling is: stuff that - the foam in my chair squashes loads in just a couple of years, so a mattress made of the stuff will probably need replacing fairly quickly ... I could be completely wrong though.

WTF has the etymology of the words got to do with anything?
Indeed, what has its original meaning got to do with its meaning eh? Lay or lie ? - English Grammar Today - Cambridge Dictionary[^] "The verb lay means ‘to put something down carefully in a flat position’. It must have an object. " "Lie is a verb which means ‘to be in or put yourself into a flat position’. ... the past simple is lay" And of course as with all weak/strong forms of verbs you can use 'lied' as well as 'lay' as the past simple of 'to lie'. So 'she lied on the bed' is the same as 'she lay on the bed'. (if you dont know about weak strong verbs yet think about dived dove, weaved wove, etc. A strong form is one where the participle spelling is maintained in the past simple. ) But 'to lay' as a verb is for an object.
Your lack of knowledge of English grammar is amply demonstrated by your mindless misinterpretation of the clause "It must have an object". Look up the grammatical meaning of the word "object". It is neither the same as its meaning in programming, nor in the way that you interpreted it. Hint: it says "have an object", not "be an object" (but even that is not strictly true -- it must be able to take an object, not always have one).

Yes, this is why they didnt use memory foam for the couches in space ships of course.
Your bedroom (which I shouldn't be surprised to find is in the basement of your mother's house) may be done up like a spaceship, but the rest of us have grown-ups' furniture.

NASA saved cash didnt they, when they designed couches for astronauts to lie in, for days. They just wanted cheap didnt they, fuck the comfort, fuck it all, so long as its cheap. Thats why they invented memory foam, because it is cheap isnt it, much cheaper than springs. You really are a massive idiot Mark. Why do you keep doing this to yourself?

Your new signature is highly appropriate. Let's hope it's not a transitive thing (which is unlikely, because you obviously don't know the meaning of "transitive").

Y'know, if you take a face tissue, the kind that's meant for blowing your nose, and try to mop up spilled milk with it, it doesn't do a very good job of it. And if you try to mop up spilled milk with kitchen tissues, they do a good job -- but they won't half make your nose sore, if you use them to blow your nose. The differences between a couch on a spaceship and the bed in a bedroom of a normal house are way greater than the differences between the two types of tissue, because they are designed to serve extremely different functions, and they follow technological patterns that are worlds apart. Of course, a troll won't care about that kind of thing. He'll just cling on to a ridiculous argument, and continually insult people who point out that what he's saying makes no bleeding sense whatsoever.

Memory Foam | NASA[^] "Perhaps the most widely recognized NASA spinoff, memory foam was invented by NASA-funded researchers looking for ways to keep test pilots cushioned during flights. Today, memory foam makes for more comfortable beds, couches and chairs, not to mention better shoes, movie theater seats and even football helmets." Yeah, so massively different it has NO application at all for the rest of us. /sarcasm Idiot.

Not only that, but which position do you want it to remember? AFAIK, the only people who sleep in exactly the same position every night, and never move at all when they're asleep, are the ones who are only "asleep" because it says so on their gravestones.

I sleep in as many positions as the cat will allow me. Which is one, and don't wriggle too much if you value your toes. Herself on the other hand ... she sleeps in as many positions as it takes to wrap Herself up in the whole duvet like a sausage roll. :sigh:

Mattress makers have begun switching to a solid piece of foam. I lied (laid ?) down on one this week. Brought back memories of judo mats from my teenage days. But then,,,,,, Is that such a bad thing ? I will be purchasing something on which to sleep soon. Has (or is) anyone else around here used (or using) a foam mattress ? Any Difference ? Good ? Bad ? Better ? Worse ?
Two-part caution: 1 - If polyurethane, or similarly composed material, if it's not properly cured it will emit very low levels of formaldehyde. This, over time, causes some very serious chronic illnesses. 2 - If made in China (you can be sure of that, if not now, soon) then the chances of poor quality control is significantly greater than substantial. I know the problem. I'm always waking up with aches and pains because at least one appendage is suffering from exposure. And the cat makes a rubbish -- and bloody expensive to maintain -- hot-water bottle.

There's no point in trying to have an intelligent or intellectual discussion with fatboy/munchies matt. If you heard a whooshing noise, it was the meaning of what you said flying over his head -- but don't worry: he'll google for a wikipedia page on the subject, and instantly become the world's greatest expert on it. Thankfully, he's the only troll that has made CP his home.

We've had a foam mattress for about a year now and so far, we like it. We call it the marshmallow because it 'hugs you and never lets you go'. I like it because I don't move every time my partner does and it is supportive where it needs to be. It does depend on what position you sleep in though. I don't think it is comfortable for sleeping on your stomach. I find it a little warmer than springs but not uncomfortably so.

The cat makes an excellent footwarmer, provided I don't move too much. Or he doesn't move too much: he pushes quite aggressively if a leg is in his way and you can end up doing Yoga in your sleep. A "real" bottle would be cheaper - and rather less smelly as well.
