I recently migrated all the machines at home to Linux because I refuse to use Win10.

I'm running Win10 Home but other than that it's the same as yours: 1803 Build 17134.523 And if I use WIN+L to lock the screen I just get a "pretty picture" - I get no ads. Have you changed anything recently?

Not that I know of. I get the pretty pictures as well, but some times (not all the time) there are 2-3 links on top of the pretty picture to what appears to be commercial and/or gaming sites. Started December 21st for me...

Thanks, I'm interested and I'll check mine when I get home. We are on an older Enterprise 1709 version at work. As I looked at the version you posted and then looked up win10 versions (Windows 10 version history - Wikipedia[^]) I was struck by the fact that it was so much easier in the past to determine/differentiate which version of windows I had installed. Windows XP SP3, etc. Now, I've seen these new versions 100 times and I still don't remember anything about which version is installed on my pc at home. It's really stupid. :sigh:

I tried linux years ago just to save money from buying a Win 7 license. Worst decision. I should have paid the $100 for Windows.

No way. When I installed Linux I had to find crazy command lines just to get network drivers to work. Then other command lines to enable basic OS features. You're telling me that regular home and office users want to deal with that? No way.

Rarely. The best PR usually wins; that's how democracy and capitalism both work; on perception, not actual merits. People come here and ask which software is "best" for their problem; they want opinions, they don't like to make a list with advantages and disadvantages to judge it.

I tried linux years ago just to save money from buying a Win 7 license. Worst decision. I should have paid the $100 for Windows.

I did it for different reasons. Money wasn't the root issue, but it is admittedly a secondary or tertiary factor. When Win7 goes tits-up next year, my only alternative is to go Win10 or Linux. I refuse to infect my machine with Win10, so Linux got the nod. It hasn't been all roses, but for thwe most part, I have no issues. I still run a Win7 VM for as long as Visual Studio will run on it. Downside - I can't run any SQL server newer than 2014 because 20116 and up will not run on Win7. However, there's a version of SQL server for Linux, so it's all good.

Ya, but it didn't work for me. So many command lines just to get it up and running.

I had to install some additional software on top of ubuntu but it wasn't an oppressive task. The reason the commandline is so pervasive on KLinux is the because of the number of possible GUIs taht are available. It's difficult to write a GUI tool that supports all the available desktop platforms, and commandline always works. Linux's flexibility is its biggest downfall.
