It's just a typical capitalist ploy. USB hubs were being produced for next to nothing and sold really cheap, and the marketing/sales morons couldn't do anything about it. Then came USB 3, which gave them a chance to pretend that it was a new product -- one that had a captive market, because no-one would want USB 2 hubs, any more. So now USB 3 hubs are being produced for next to nothing and sold with immense profit margins, and we customers suckers can't do a damned thing about it. It's capitalism; the American way. Be proud that you're part of it.

My USB hub is just worn out. Looked at... * TigerDirect * BestBuy * eBay * Amazon What ever happend to the simple inexpensive USB hub ? Used to be $8 and you get 8 ports.
We have a product that for reasons that only make sense to marketing, has what is known as "the dongle farm". It looks something like this:

+-----+Each dongle represents support for one 'thing'. For customers with multiple machines, this lets them move 'thing' support from one machine to another. Fortunately, the pinhead software types on the product didn't have to solve this problem. The hardware folks and the marketing wabbos, after a drunken orgy of TLA schtuppage, decided on this solution.

...and did you like those $8 hubs? In my experience, the good USB hubs are powered, and a lot more expensive than the cheapest ones you can find--but the same can be said for most things. If they're not powered, good luck actually using 2 or 3 devices on that 8-port hub.

Who is ranting, certainly not me. It was a calm and considered discussion about the origins of the modern financial world. As least that is the way I see it. :)

Excellent observations. What I found was that the powered one that I had was defacto un-powered. I was able to use an external keyboard, a mouse, and usually 2 or 3 thumb drives. After awhile (don't have an accurate number of days/weeks/months) the physical plugs started losing their ability to physically connect. Then again, for $8, and the thing lasting 2+ years, well, pretty good value in terms of price/performance.
