The Stupid Arrogance

My PC rebooted during the night for another Windows 10 update. This time, it also started playing a Netflix in the background. Thinking to put it back to sleep, it now says I MUST create a pin # BEFORE I can sign in. I'm now being RANSOMED by Microsoft. I have only ONE pin. I've had it for forever, and I'm NOT going to use it on my computer (like probably most of the population will). So there you have it. MS now has most people's bank pin numbers; or at least they've forced people to unconsciously expose themselves to more financial risk. The arrogant stupidity of it all. On top of it, Microsoft will tell you if your pin is "too easy"?! On top of that, the "pin procedure" failed (I nearly sh*t myself), but we can "retry" at a later date. All Windows updates are now "paused" by me. Note: I can't stop them.

I feel your pain and have had to suffer much of it myself. What really pisses me off about their updates is I have closed my laptop's lid for the evening and come back to find it running. WTFF? This laptop has a GPU in it and relies on the gaps between the keys to cool itself so since the lid was closed it was very, very hot. I was absolutely livid and ready to punch one of those dimwitted dumbasses in Redmond. Now I always turn off the wi-fi before I close the lid and I haven't that nonsense happen again. While I understand the predicament of having to deal with the full spectrum of users who know nothing about computers all the way to being experts but they could allow a much wider range of options with the ability to easily return to the defaults. This is what I have to do in my software and it's really not that hard. Especially when you have a batallion of programmers under your command.

Exactly. What is your average (older) person going to do with a DEMAND for a pin when all they want to do is check their email? The MSN.COM is full of dynamic links to "your PC is infected sites". There is a general disdain for public safety that I see increasing.

I just looked at it on teh internets. Seems to be a thing. Inever saw it at home (nor at work, but it is a corporate win10 and the settings is globally disabled). Have you tried disabling it in the settings (System -> Protecting to this PC -> Require PIN for Pairing ) ? (or using one of the workarounds out there?) Oh, and AFAIK, it looks to be a short version of a long password, not a PIN to a financial institution.

I've uninstalled the update for (Feb 1) and the nag screen is gone. You have an update schedule in Settings. Also a "distribution" type. Then a pause option. All impact your update schedule. I've basically gone "pause" for as long as I can. I know it's not a "bank pin", but what is the Pavlovian response when you're in a panic about getting at your info? Too much 1984 and unanticipated social engineering.

get in line. The forced updates "we will help you" decision, in my opinion, is grounds for summary dismissal. If you worked for me, the conversation would go: me: Who decided to force updates and reboots on users? Although it's overkill for most people, if you have other needs for it anyway, then WSUS is the way to go if you're trying to have the final say on OS updates. And that covers *all* versions of Windows. Not a single update can slip through without you (a) asking for it and (b) approving it. *IF* you configure it right (which is pretty trivial).

As an older person I can tell you they would get the standard pin I use for all hotel room safes and any other pin requirement. The bank pin would never be used anywhere but the bank web site that I access via the link I store in favourites. Seriously just because we are old does not mean we are stupid, possibly senile but someone will have taken their computer away from us by then.

How about my "old" father then who is 90% blind? You know what I meant; I didn't think it necessary for a whole song and dance. In any event, I had another ("farm-type") "older relative" get ripped off by the "infected pc script" site who should have contacted me first. Her "farm-type" nephew could have fixed it too. Or is farm-type a problem for you too? Oh, and I'm probably older than you.

MS account. Nothing has varied from my sigin / sleep procedures. No setting changes. Nada. This was triggered by their update. While in sleep mode.

PIN only happens on MS Accounts. You may have been lucky till now.
