You may be thinking of .Net Core. Even still, a new version of VS every two years is two often.

Our shop is evaluating it now. If it looks good then we will move most of our projects to 2019. Should know by next week. From what I have heard so far is that the UI and other functionality is a lot more performant than 2017. I, personally, have not tried it yet.

I installed one of the pre-release versions and tried it out. No issues, but then again I pretty much just stick to vanilla C# programming -- console or WinForm apps.

Yes, I've downloaded VS2019 and have the absolute latest preview -- just installed the update yesterday. I'm an Early Adopter. Actually, I wanted to try out .NET Core 3.x and even though it had been released you couldn't use it in 2017 so I downloaded 2019. I hate the new Project Selection window and the main interface is following that minimalist crap. And, there is intellisense that places odd little light-up comments all through your code. Plus, a number of old Project Templates are gone. But, as it is with all companies, it is what you get. So I may as well get used to it now, I guess.:~

It is not something that is beneficial nor required for development; I do not log in to calc.exe, I do not see why an IDE should be any different. Also bricked my phone again, so am without one for the time. Means I could not create an account even if I wanted to. Why do I need to own a phone to launch a desktop application?

Nope. I downloaded 2017, and some earlier ones. As it turns out, however, I've not much use for them. Since I'll not go beyond Win7, anyway, before going full Linux, I'd more likely be exploring possibilities in that world. As for my paycheck? They hired me for C++ but it's moved to full web apps. With the exception of a recent exception (site access secured by a local .exe and machine registration), I've hardly done anything with a real language for quite a while.

Not downloaded an MS-IDE ever since it required me to sign in with a email that's connected to a password passport.

No, for core I expect frequent changes because it is quite new to market. But VS has been there for so long. I am still using VS 2015. I wonder what significant change might have happened between 15 and 19.

I got annoyed by that too but I think I got around it. I just clicked away the dialogue. But then I could mis-remember - that was some while ago. I am happily on Linux these days and VS Code installed like a charm, but I assume it does not have all the dotnet-goodies.

No login-screen when you launch the IDE, as 2012 does?

No, for core I expect frequent changes because it is quite new to market. But VS has been there for so long. I am still using VS 2015. I wonder what significant change might have happened between 15 and 19.

Well, 17 allows you to do core 2.n razor razor pages. I don't know if you can do that with 2015. 19 allows you to do Core 3.0.
