Cory Booker wants all gun owners to have a federal firearms license. My response - we already do, and it's called the 2nd Amendment. Of course, he would know that if he would take the time to actually *read* the Constitution.

Maybe he wants to put the well regulated in the "well regulated militia". What is well regulated anyway? It could be anything, per example mandating all firearms to be replaced with bubble guns.

I'm glad you asked. Back when the 2nd was written, members of a standing army were referred to as "regulars", in that they were trained to be proficient in the use of the arms of the day and provisioned (with ammo and weapons)". So, "well regulated" meant that the members of the militia be well trained and provisioned so they'd be ready to defend the Constitution (thus fulfilling the "security of a free State"). The clause "well regulated" has absolutely NOTHING to do with restricting the ownership of firearms, but instead says that ALL citizens be armed and trained/provisioned, like the "regulars" are. the reason for that is that the "militia" couldn't hope to defend anything without the use of and training with current battlefield-capable weapons. And to be clear, an AR-15 is NOT a battlefield-capable weapon. There isn't a single military force that uses AR-15's.

Yes, it most certainly does. What it doesn't do is "grant" the right.

Good job, Cory!

That was the intent, yes. Of course, back then, females were excluded for general consideration, but that was a cultural norm. Male children of the era were generally proficient in the use of firearms by the time they were 6-8 years old.

Yeah, and ain't that a shame.

With the level of maturity exhibited by people nowadays, I personally think allowing anyone younger than 18 to own a gun should be prohibited, but that doesn't mean they can't be well trained in the use of said weapons. I was a very competent marksman by the age of 10, yet I never shot up a school/movie theater - it never even crossed my mind to do so. Times were different back then, but that doesn't mean the 2nd Amendment is any less applicable.

True. Most states are like that I believe.

It does guarantee the absolute right. The fact that the individual states say a violent felon no longer has the right to own a firearm is not a statement on the 2nd Amendment. What it means is that the states are exercising their 10th Amendment right: "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people." Furthermore, the Constitution wasn't written to limit what the people could do, it was written to limit what the federal government could do.

Politicians (as a group) are generally the least intelligent people on the planet. It doesn't really matter what party affiliation they might claim (or not claim). They only say what they think their constituents want to hear.

That kind of implies that it does.

It does, but democrats don't generally see it that way, again, because they haven't bothered to actually READ the Constitution. Booker wants a federally issued gun license. Licensing leads to registration, and registration leads to confiscation. Finally, confiscation leads to oppression and genocide. History lays it out for us (if we care to observe the lessons).
