I've inherited a Visual Basic project. :sigh: Last time I saw VB was back in the early 90s. It took me a few minutes poking around before I figured out how to find the dang source code.

Figured I'd post about it and at least gain some humor in the situation :)

Have you started the rewrite yet?

VB.NET, or VB6? The first is easy to translate to C#, can even be done by a machine. If it is VB6, it should simply be burned, without any questions.

I remember my first VB project. Until that point I hadn't even looked at VB, in school I went from Pascal to C++, then Java, and stuck with C based languages. Politely pointed out that I might not be the best choice from the pool of developers as I did not have VB on my resume, didn't know VB, had never worked in it, and didn't understand it. My PHB replied that since I knew C# and Java so VB should be easy by comparison. He then went on to assign a project deadline based on his reading of chicken bones. :sigh:

Well, yes, surely it's easier to forget how to code than it is to learn how to! PHB's can be so much smarter than they seem (admittedly that's still not remotely smart in the conventional sense of the word).

So is brainfuck, but I would not want a project in that language.

Run while you have the chance. Or ask for at least a thousand dollar more each month. If you accept a VB6-project, you really deserve it.

If you can handle VB6, you can handle anything. Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach. Your burgerflippers are the part that fail even at teaching.

Indeed. I've seen children as old as 7 continue playing with VB, like they're an infant! I told the kid to grow up and use F# or something.

Yes. Yes he will. Sometimes I write

                                    If something Then ...

in C++. Or Next at the end of for loops. IT lives. IT wants to be fed. IT won't let you go.

If you can handle VB6, you can handle anything. Those who can, do. Those who cannot, teach. Your burgerflippers are the part that fail even at teaching.

Ahhh, the 'no money for the rewrite' took me weeks, ended up doing a C# version at the weekend for my own benefit. The people in charge needed to use it, so I gave them my C# version while I was working on the VB version, the exe ran faster and was smaller I was asked why I still converting the VB... :wtf:

Then it was written by a "VB6 professional". Run. Run like hell. I'm not joking either. This is my professional advice, don't get burned by that crap. Run while you have the chance. Or ask for at least a thousand dollar more each month. If you accept a VB6-project, you really deserve it.

Tell me how you really feel... Yeah, I don't have much choice in the matter. Thankfully, it's a relatively simple application.
