There are C, C++, C#, VB, J++, Java, SQL, XML, ASP... users here. With some programming language like C, we can build an OS. What about if you have multiple teams working on the same functionality and after their specified functionality was complete, the teams would compare differences and then blend those into the desired core functionality. One of the most difficult parts it to organize the entire project. The specifications could be a nightmare. There would have to be ground work laid from the beginning on security, debugging API, UI's (possibly multiple) along integrated testing and health monitoring. It is just truly boring in the computer field of today. We have tons of technology but it is usually held up by big companies that have their own agenda in mind. Many people go googles over OS-X because it has a few fancy graphics, something a "little" different from the norm. Where are the radical ideas I grew up with. Back in my time, we would usually hear something fairly radical ever year or two. Huge steps not just a little here or there. I remember when the Commodore 64 was hot. People were programming this little 64K (32K usable) RAM machines for business use not to mention how many homes had them. Then the industry heard of the fancy new Amiga computer that had all this new technology. How about the original Mac? What happened after that? Nothing! They just sat back and continued with the same old stuff until the Mac died and they replaced it with a unix clone. I am so hungry for something new. Anyone else? Every person who wants to download a file from CP ( and possibly post, I'm not sure ) needs to register. That is why the numbers have exploded. Out of that, you'd have maybe 100,000 competent programmers, of which 20,000 would read the site regularly, and maybe 400 would have the time, the energy, and the inclination to involve themselves in such a project. I think the best bet for this is to do work on Linix and the Wine project. The biggest problem I see with a shinny new operating system is it will have to be 100% windows compatible or no one will use it. Also you will have to convince software companies to program for your new operating system. In its day OS/2 was better than windows but windows was more popular, installed on all new machines by default, everyone wrote their applications for windows so OS/2 lost. I think the situation will be much harder now because there are soo many applications for windows. It would be very hard to convince someone to write applications for your operating system. This is the biggest problem for Linux. John
