Trump didn't say that Tim was right nor did he say he changing his mind on the tariffs. So Tim Cook was able to explain his position, big hairy deal. The left needs to make up its mind, on the one hand they complain that Apple is using slave labor by having their phones made in China but on the other hand Trump is wrong to put tariffs on products on goods produced by that slave labor. Article also points out Trump has encouraged Apple to make their product in America. Wouldn't have a tariff on those phones.

No the wouldn't, but the effect would be the same: higher costs.

Not necessarily. It's been hinted that Apple / FoxConn have been automating at a massive scale. Robots in China are no cheaper than robots elsewhere.

ah, wasn't aware of the automation aspect. So then, you're probably right, if true.

They are, but you need to define "massive". There is still a lot of manual labor involved, and the difference in cost is still way to high. BTW, check with some people how it goes with Foxconn in Madison Wisconsin. They were supposed to get 13000 jobs.

Pretty ironic coming from a citizen of a country notorious to get involved into the affairs of other countries. You know, like invading to steal oil, topple democratically elected governments to replace them with dictators, etc. At least, we are only expressing an opinion. If you don't like it, just don't read it. Don't be a jackass.

Apple could keep the consumer price the same and just make less on each unit. Didn't they become a Trillion dollar company a couple of years ago? Or are you okay with workers making slave wages as long as it doesn't effect you?

You're right, they could. However, that's irrelevant to the point about costs. How they decide to cover the costs by passing them on to the consumer or by absorbing them altogether is a different argument. But whether or not they do, my post is still valid. Well, maybe not, if you consider automation.

According to history, my ancestors were pretty friendly with some natives, but in war with others, usually because they would fight the enemies of the natives they were friends with. With the English, that was another story. They did pretty bad things to my ancestors and to the natives. On the other, I agree that my ancestors (or rather my ancestors' country) did pretty bad things to the African and Asians.

Interesting, but don't you think it would defeat the purpose of tariffs? I am not an economist, but the idea of tariffs is to discourage people from buying goods from foreign countries and encourage them to buy goods produced locally (or from a more economically friendly country). And maybe hurt the tariffed country economically. Consumers getting tax cuts when they buy chinese goods makes no sense. If the American people want to make a difference, they should stop buying Chinese products, tariff or not. In my household, we limit buying what is made abroad. Not always possible, but we do our best.

I am not worthy of being insulted by JSOP himself, so he is sending his minion after me.

And your current generation has made it illegal to put a sign on your business in the language of your choice. And if you wear any overt religious symbols (turbans, crosses, yarmulke, etc) you are not welcome in the public service or as a teacher. You guys are awesome!

Yeah, I agree, mostly, but it's not always possible as you noted.
