I Disagree With Shutting Down the Soapbox

It makes CP self-cleaning, as the vast majority of crap that would otherwise appear elsewhere on the site has a place to be, kinda like the Indian-only forum. I think it's an ill-conceived notion that will blow back into the rest of CP.
That's an interesting argument. Once the Soapbox is gone the regular lounge is going to get the trolls encroaching gradually more and more. Strict banning procedures and active deleting will be needed. Unless the Soapbox takes a lot of resources - and deleting any conversations more than a three days old (to allow for weekends) might help alleviate that, it should be left in place as a place to gather unwanted trash and trolls. What do you think @chris-maunder?

Soapbox 1.0 is a private forum with no links in CP to it. Seems like that would be a good place to contain and isolate problematic discussions.

My theory is that because CP is moderated, he has some liability under Canadian law for any inflammatory statements published. I certainly would understand why he wishes to dispose of this liability.

There's no such thing as "hate speech". There's "unpopular" speech, and that kind of speech is protected by the 1st Amendment (in the US, but not in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter). I wouldn't be surprised if what you say is true, though. Chrios should come out and say that though instead of claiming to make CP more on-topic. I'm sure that's a factor, but the REAL reason is probably as you stated.
