I Disagree With Shutting Down the Soapbox

It makes CP self-cleaning, as the vast majority of crap that would otherwise appear elsewhere on the site has a place to be, kinda like the Indian-only forum. I think it's an ill-conceived notion that will blow back into the rest of CP.
How about we get rid of the Soapbox and replace it with the Foil-Hat-Forum ? This way, everyone can be happy!

Suggested foil-hat-forum rules: 1. Only trolls may post there 2. Trolls may post nowhere else 3. Chris will nominate trolls at his exclusive discretion 4. All decisions of the judges are final. No members of the Code Project staff or their families are eligible to participate. Offer void where prohibited.

Soapbox 1.0 is a private forum with no links in CP to it. Seems like that would be a good place to contain and isolate problematic discussions.

My theory is that because CP is moderated, he has some liability under Canadian law for any inflammatory statements published. I certainly would understand why he wishes to dispose of this liability.

There's no such thing as "hate speech". There's "unpopular" speech, and that kind of speech is protected by the 1st Amendment (in the US, but not in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter). I wouldn't be surprised if what you say is true, though. Chrios should come out and say that though instead of claiming to make CP more on-topic. I'm sure that's a factor, but the REAL reason is probably as you stated.

What's freedom of speech worth if noone is there to listen? And your press can quite easily be shutdown with a barrage of litigations.

It's funny how Americans think theirs is the only country that protects free speech. First of all, many countries protect speech, second of all you have no more free speech than those countries. You are still bound by other laws regarding libel\slander etc, and your 1st amendment only protects you from government curtailing your speech.
