I Disagree With Shutting Down the Soapbox

All that would accomplish is the blocking of the domain from canadian users by the evil Canadian big brother overlords.

Given that the Soapbox has been here for years, I doubt that Chris is closing it down in a fit of pique. My theory is that because CP is moderated, he has some liability under Canadian law for any inflammatory statements published. I certainly would understand why he wishes to dispose of this liability.
Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows. -- 6079 Smith W.
There's no such thing as "hate speech". There's "unpopular" speech, and that kind of speech is protected by the 1st Amendment (in the US, but not in Canada, or anywhere else for that matter). I wouldn't be surprised if what you say is true, though. Chrios should come out and say that though instead of claiming to make CP more on-topic. I'm sure that's a factor, but the REAL reason is probably as you stated.

Move your servers to the US where freedom of speech exists.

The US is way too litigious, no doubt, but still better than no freedom of speech.

There is no absolute freedom of speech. Otherwise defamation would not exist. We have freedom of press instead, it's actually better.

I'm no expert of American "free speech" let alone any variations of it across the globe... but what makes you say that your "freedom of the press" is better than our "free speech"? Just curious...

What's freedom of speech worth if noone is there to listen? And your press can quite easily be shutdown with a barrage of litigations.

It's funny how Americans think theirs is the only country that protects free speech. First of all, many countries protect speech, second of all you have no more free speech than those countries. You are still bound by other laws regarding libel\slander etc, and your 1st amendment only protects you from government curtailing your speech.

Neither does yours :) Again this is your problem, you think the American way of doing things is the only way of doing things. Different countries have different legal structures and just because one country doesn't exactly mimic your legal structure doesn't mean they don't have your rights. You don't even understand your *own* laws, yet you are attacking the laws of other countries? Why should you need laws that tell you what you *can* do? Laws are for saying what you *can't* do and your 1st Amendment says the government *can't* impeded your right to speak - your implication that the US law protects your freedom of speech is an incorrect assumption on your part, the very premise of your argument is incorrect but I'll continue with the spirit of your argument. In the UK we have a common law "negative right" to free speech. No-one has created a law saying we can't speak freely, ergo we have protected freedom of speech. In addition to those century old rights we also have the more modern Human Rights Act which does explicitly grant freedom of speech, so we have both a "positive right" and a "negative right" to free speech.

It's adorable that you believe that. Just the other day OG pointed out that his neighbor got ticked for calling his other neighbor a name. Ya, you have free speech.  Boy, that was a wasted post.
