It's only just dawned on me that that phrase makes no sense at all. I can't blame my not noticing before on my getting older, because it was in use when I was a lot younger -- but spotting it now could be a sign that I'm getting smarter.

😟 i am trying to understand what you mean? For me all i see is that the desktop term comes from digitising the physical desk. Trach can, draws, folders. As for for Desktop wallpaper I imagine when the developer working in a cubical, where you could stick things to vertical surfaces. I've only ever worked in "open" work places, because as a developer I want more noise 🤷♂️

And remember that if you mix up wallpaper paste and K-Y, your wallpaper might fall off the walls.

Do you have a real, physical desk? How did its makers finish its top?
a: with varnish or lacquer? b: with melamine? c: with Fablon? d: with Formica? e: with 1mm, 1.2mm, or 1.5mm wood laminate? f: with wallpaper?
If they went for f, it's probably best not to buy furniture from them again.

Smarter? Yes, that is possible, but I have yet to find someone who got wiser with age. :sigh:
So, when you were 3 years old, you were as wise as you were at 16? As wise at 16 as you were at 20, and your wisdom level is still that of a 3 year old or lower? Consider that part of wisdom comes from acknowledging what you DO NOT know, and the experience of surprises... I am surprised you feel you have gotten no wiser since you were 3. And nobody else, in general, does either... This is not to attack you... But to challenge the assertion and prove the assertion is wrong. I sincerely DOUBT you are barely equally as wise as you were on any 5 yr interval going back. My father may not be as bright as I am (LOL), but I admit he is wiser in many ways, mostly from his life experiences. And yet, in some areas, not chance... He's far to trusting of others!

Okay, but it's a Virtual Desktop, held vertically. So, you could call it a "covering" or "tablecloth", or "runner"... But wallpaper meant the right thing to me. Now, Dragging a diskette to a garbage can to EJECT... That's CRAZY! :laugh:

We've already covered that[^]. The actual desktop is horizontal, but is projected onto a vertical screen, which is why CRT monitors were so big. Nowadays, projection software is vastly improved, so monitors can be much slimmer.

This have given me an idea for an unmixed-metaphor GUI. It will have a desktop, but it will be covered by a proper blotter. The mouse pointer will of course be replaced by a nib, which will need to be periodically dipped into the inkwell at the bottom right of the screen to keep it working (fountain pen upgrades available in the app store). To save a document, you of course turn it over and press it to the blotter. If you want to send an email the pneumatic tubes are there for you on the right, and if you want to open a chat session there's a teletype to your left. There will be no windows, because as everyone knows if you want work to get done you put people in a room with no windows. This is golden, I should pitch it to VC guys. A decade ago this would have been enough to get to an IPO.
