There is no way I would even contemplate missing an important event involving one of my children for any reason. "Sacrifices" like that are what you agreed to when you decided to become a parent.

Attending an event where my daughter is honored for her acheivements is surely going to generate memories that will live as long as I do. Not too sure that sacrifice really describes that. Opportunity is perhaps more apt. Chris Meech "what makes CP different is the people and sense of community, things people will only discover if they join up and join in." That's an easy one. As in all decisions in life, your personal reasons should take priority over everything else. You will obviously get more enjoyment out of the concert than the graduation ceremony. So I say go to the concert. Don't worry about your daughter, she'll get over it in a few years. Besides, there will be plenty other people in the crowd to listen to her and clap. I'm afraid the selfish, evil side wins every time Chris.:laugh::laugh: John www.silveronion.com[^]

Thanks John. Normally, I can just make a decision pretty quick and live with the consequences. But I'm faced with one that's got no middle ground for compromise. So I thought I'd seek out some helpful suggestions from my fellow CPians. About three months ago, I purchased a pair of tickets for my wife and I to go see Neil Young and Crazy Horse perform here in Toronto. The two of us have really been looking forward to this concert and are huge fans. We have just discovered though that the night of the concert, just happens to be the same night as our youngest daughter's grade eight graduation ceremony. Too make matters worse, she is probably going to be winning several awards and plaques and within the next day or two, we will hear whether she has been selected to give the validictory speech. My selfish evil side says go to the concert and my doting father side says go to the graduation ceremony. Unhappily I can not do both. What say you guys and gals? Oh man, have you stirred up a hornet's nest. If you don't go to your daughter's pseudo graduation she will never forget it. And, she will be sure to remind you of it when it is time to plan her wedding. How do I know this? I saw my wife who was validictorian (sp?) use this very technique to coerice money from her dad. That being said, she'll probably coerice money out of you anyway so go concert. :) Hey don't worry, I can handle it. I took something. I can see things no one else can see. grad ceremony. If you go there and it's boring, well, no big surprise. But imagine seing Neil and being bored... :suss: (I've got mixed feelings towards the Stones since I saw them in concert...) To make matters better, tell your daughter you can't be at the grad because of the concert, but show up ;P

eBay the tickets and go to the kid's school function. Reasoning: you have to live with both the kid and the wife, neither of which (esp. the wife) that will let you forget you didn't show up for something as "important" as this (never mind it will be boring, your butt will fall asleep on the chairs, and nobodoy will remember it a month from now). Then find a concert of something you like that they/she doesn't, and buy just one ticket.

I can't believe you have all missed the obvious; Move the grade 8 school graduation to the concert. Imagine Neil Young or Crazy Horse presenting the "Most improved speller" award to little Timothy and the "Star Pupil" award to your daughter. It will be crazy... horse... man! Failing that; What Meg said :)

I don't know if it's common over there - but in this country it's possible to buy tickets on secondhand sites - what about trying to sell them? You should have enough time... [EDIT] Okay I see this has been suggested already, but I still think it's a good idea. [/EDIT] Paul ;) I have been afraid always. When you see something insurmountable ahead of you, say to yourself: "All right! I am afraid. Now that I've been properly afraid, let's go forward." That is the whole secret. - Jeanne d'Arc

I mean who wouldn't want to hear 'This Note's for you' as you make your way on stage to receive that piece of paper that lets you out of grade school. And after all it could be argued that 'I've seen the needle and the damage done' is highly instructional and provides a good educational message. Paul, this is getting way outta hand, don't you think? :-D Chris Meech "what makes CP different is the people and sense of community, things people will only discover if they join up and join in."
