I have put a couple of "THIS MACHINE HAS NO BRAIN, PLEASE USE YOURS (IF PROVIDED)" stickers in places where I had to jump in and repair something

M.D.V. ;) If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about? Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you Rating helpful answers is nice, but saying thanks can be even nicer.

A long time ago, in the fifties, there was a poster on a wall at the computer lab at Stanford, having this text posted. Or so I'm told.

I really needed that last week when a colleague went into a database and deleted a bunch of 'unnecessary' stuff, then calls me to complain about the app being broken. :sigh:

It's still relevant! In fact I've been looking for a copy of this! I'm a manufacturing engineer in the automotive industry. It's impossible to get people to keep their hands to themselves. If you put a button on something, someone's going to poke it just to see what it does. Knobs are worse! In fact at one time I disconnected the wires from a speed control knob and wired in a plain old resistor so it would run at the correct speed. Left the knob in place, the operators continued to adjust it from shift to shift certain they could produce more parts with their settings. (upstream operation had a fixed cycle time) Now with PLC's we can eliminate most buttons and knobs, but you still have to prevent access to sensitive settings. Passwords get written on the panels or shared, physical keys end up in known locations etc. We've gotten to a point now where we have to control access by employee ID badge.

The pressing of the CapsLock key is a skill lost in time.

NO, THIS LONG PREDATES CAPS LOCK - EVERYTHING WAS IN CAPITALS. TELETYPES, PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES - THE LOT. If you wanted lower case, use a typewriter! (I remember the first time I saw a line printer spew out something with lower case - did a serious double-take.)

Sometime in 1985, I took my young son in with me while I did some work on a Dec_System-20. He happily played beside me by stacking some orange cones that were put out when the floor was wet, or so I thought. The next day I found he had turned off a disk drive on a Vax system. At that age, I couldn't have resisted the lighted button he pushed. Fortunately, the system was not critical. I think that message was posted somewhere, but then he couldn't read yet so it didn't matter.

That reminds me. I must get started on the PiDP-11/70 (and PiDP-8/E) kits I got as presents... PiDP-11 | obsolescence[^] Ans yes,I am old enough to have used an original PDP-11/70 (and a PDP-8) and done more than just "WATSCHEN DER BLINKENLICHTEN".
