I wonder if anybody here can explain this: On my iPhone I NEVER let ANY app access my contacts. Despite this my Telegram [messaging-]app discovers my contacts, when friends sign up for Telegram.:confused::confused: No it is not because they have me in their contacts/Telegram, they appear in Telegram with the nickname i have given them in my "Contacts". And please save your "Apple-fanboi-jokes" for a better opportunity. Thanks.

Maybe it's your friends that allow the app to snatch the contact list and when they do that it kind'ok make your contact "visible" ?

            I'd rather be phishing!

It's not like Android security is such a brightly shining star either.

No. As explained in my OP. How would their app know what nicknames I have given them?

At least they don't charge you a premium price for android - comes on a $50 flip phone.   Moreover, they don't threaten your warranty unless you only do business with them.

This link, below, gave me an idea you can try: The Lounge[^] Create some new nickname contacts - see if they propagate. Even just slightly change the spelling of a few (they could check/cull for valid contact list entries). If the updates show them perhaps you may wish to write apple a stern letter.

Well they have obviously (or maybe you just let them) breached the GDPR so you can sue them.

Privacy, as in the lack of and you really have none.

This link, below, gave me an idea you can try: The Lounge[^] Create some new nickname contacts - see if they propagate. Even just slightly change the spelling of a few (they could check/cull for valid contact list entries). If the updates show them perhaps you may wish to write apple a stern letter.

They probably only allow fan mail (at a premium). There is no stern letter option.

Thanks.

Did you check under Settings | Privacy | Contacts whether Telegram is on the list? I see Telegram does have access to my Contacts, even though I can't recall expressly giving it. I've turned off Contacts access now, I'd like to see what happens. Only way to really know would be to uninstall the app, reinstall, expressly forbid Contacts access, and then check in the Settings whether it's got access anyway.
