How to make Linux and Windows worse at the same time

Windows to become emulation layer on top of Linux... It already is for me: I run Ubuntu 18.04 exclusively and simply Remmina (RDP) to Windows OS only when I have to. MS Teams runs natively on Ubuntu as does VS Code. I have not missed the painful update cycle at all. Just hope no one screws up Linux. :laugh:

At home, I didn't see Windows for years... I used to have VMs for SQL and VS, but today I run SQL directly on Linux and use VS Code... Those few games I have (5-6) are all running on Wine, or native Linux... So I can't see why add any more layers to that...

Surely it makes best use of their core strengths. MS have never really cracked the nuts and bolts of an OS and there has never been mass acceptance of Linux on the desktop. And before anyone jumps down my throat - I have been on Kubuntu for circa 10 years. Why not copy the MacOS model? They've done OK. :)

One of the absolutely stupidest things they do is they will start up a laptop with the lid closed and have it update itself and then stay on, even with the lid closed. Apparently the idiotic morons in Redmond think that is acceptable. IT IS NOT! Stupid stuff like this makes me seriously question whether they know a damned thing about computers. That behavior indicates clearly they do not.

Linux does okay if you ignore the fact that things like updates on an LTS release of Ubuntu hose grub causing the machine to fail to boot. Or random updates make certain features stop working. Etc. Pretty much ignore all the same things I hate about windows, but also it can't run anything I find important like Visual Studio

I can work around it - *every time* GRUB is updated I go back in and hand patch my boot record.

The only time I had an issue with Ubuntu was the one time I tried to upgrade from one LTS release to the next. Otherwise, I have had zero issues with about 6 machines I've had on Ubuntu since 2007. Your issues with grub may be due to the developers not correctly dealing with dual boot systems? Don't know.

Not seen that here. Running Mint and moving to LMDE (maybe they are setting up to move away from Ubuntu?). Run some Windows VM's for software maintenance. I think, but can't prove, that those VM's do better running under Linux.
If you can keep your head while those about you are losing theirs, perhaps you don't understand the situation.

I'm considering moving to Mint. I picked Ubuntu because of the huge user base (makes it easier to find solutions to problems with it) but in the end it has left me very disappointed. I'd rather run Win7 as my VM host because it just works.

I don't have any dual boot. It seems to be getting confused by UEFI but I can't tell for sure.

11 months and counting since they tried an update with the lid closed and running on batteries and I chucked the SSD holding the POS that is Lose10 into a drawer. I bought the last laptop to avoid Lose8 and still its HDD lives on in this one.. You don't suck Microsoft. At all.

Is it 18.04? I’m running it on a laptop & desktop with no problems with GRUB. There was an issue but they recently patched it.
Yes 18.04 - I've been avoiding updates on my machine because I got tired of manually patching after every update. Probably the fix is in one of those. The problem is if it doesn't work. I need to go find a USB stick i'm not using and put linux on it in case it hoses my boot record again. I'll get around to it. Thanks for letting me know they may have fixed it.
