Laptop display size "survey"

My personal laptop is 15.6, the one my employer provided is 17.3 At the end of the day, I'm comfortable with both, my major complaint is that I actually care less about horizontal width than I do about vertical height. I wish they didn't make them so damn short. I like to see lots of lines of code, lots of lines of documentation, etc. Yeah, there's the "turn it on edge" option, but if the lappy is the only device I'm using, that's rather impracticable. Wish they didn't all have to conform with "watching movies" standards. :(

So, my current laptop is 3.5 years old, and although I am confident in it, I received a "computer porn" email from my supplier. By that phrase I mean, "omg, the new version is gorgeous! Choice of processors (high end intel or amd), I'll certainly beef up the storage and RAM on my own, spec'd with an NVidia 3080... drool. Okay so this would be for a mainly development laptop. I normally stick with the 15.6" displays. They fit in my laptop backpack and seem to be in the sweet spot. But this new puppy comes with a 17.3" display at 2560x1440 with an nvidia 3080 GPU. :omg: So, for those of you who develop on laptops - insights and opinions into 15.6 vs. 17.3?

I became a believer in multiple displays a long time ago. I mainly work at two locations (home and the customer's lab) so I duplicate equipment as much as I can. My external monitor is A 2560X1440 dELL 25" something or other. I love it; hence, my question. Most of the time, I see 17" displays and they are at the same resolution as my 15.6, and I think, meh. But a 17 at 2560? We could go... I'm going to wander down to best buy and see if they have anything on display..

17" is not a laptop, it's a foldable desktop. Better get a docking station and a pair of proper monitors instead. 14" is light enough to always bring around, and large enough to read.

One doesn't develop on a laptop. Get a desktop. Laptops are expensive for the power they pack in a limited space. Desktops are cheap. Get a cheap second hand-laptop to remote-desktop into your desktop. Not joking. A desktop gives you more bang for yer buck. Doesn't require a monitor either, just remote desktop. Get a decent system, not a glorified tab.

Depends on the purpose... I would not buy a 17'' for work or the taking with me everyday, but I do have a 17'' as multimedia center in the living room that comes with us, when we go on vacation. I get the laptop and my JBL3 and with that we can still have our films with us and enjoy them with a screen that is comfortable for the eyes even being a bit away.

Depends how you use it. If it's your primary machine (or a machine you use a lot) and screen size is critical then the biggest screen that you're able to carry. For me, I've always used 13" but would grab a 14" if it was as small, or smaller, than the footprint of a current Macbook Pro . If I have to use the screen it's either being used as a secondary machine or I'm travelling between offices and 13" gets me through well enough. However, for working, I always connect to a 27" external. Everyone has their own answer. Whatever works best for you.

I like 15 inch because 17 won't fit in a backpack very easily.

...and how are you enjoying that screendoor effect? :-) Or is that 4K? I have a 40" 4K TV as my primary display, and at its native resolution, text is smaller on it than it is on my 27" 1080p monitor. For the equivalent text size (without rescaling), 4K would have to be spread across 54". So presumably you're right at the sweet spot.

I don't see well enough for it to impact me i guess. Either that or this TV is just good about it, or I've gotten so used to it I just don't notice. It's only 1080p
