"Might". The chance is lowered, by a lot. The snot you normally spray and contains most is caught. That's why you need wash your hands and stop touching your eyes.

better yet, let's all just wear full body space suits with self contained filtration systems. NYC Health Department recommends double masking to fight COVID[^] I personally, think this is stupid, and we are now just being silly.

Because most can't fit one properly ... the odds are better with more layers, I suspect. For the non-medical ones, if you knot the strings where they connect first, the whole thing fits better. As for not stopping "sneezing and coughing", you're supposed to do that "into your elbow" ... the argumentative tend to skip over that part. Being based in the UK you will also know that Ofcom clamps down on any mainstream media outlets questioning the government narrative. Which is why the BBC has not been asking any questions.

But if your bank balance exceeds the cube of the result of your IQ multiplied by your shoe size then government laws start to apply less and less.

I don't know where I get mine, because my wife bought them. :-D They look like surgical masks but may not be N95 rated. But they certainly seem to be better than cloth masks.

The little earloop blue surgical masks are not rated for viruses. They're bacteria-catchers. And the study showed that the only ones in the surgical suite who actually need to wear them are the folks leaning over the patient. More anti-drool than anything else.

Every time I've been to the hospital or doctor's or dentist during the epidemic, the doctors and dentists have all been wearing double masks. Usually two different kinds. Might be because some masks are better at blocking outgoing viruses while others are better at filtering incoming ones?

I understand your frustration. Since the quality of whatever china feels like shipping is always in doubt (even the quality of the bogus 3M masks they send), you need to be sure that the primary purpose of the masking is properly accomplished - which is to capture and thereby reduce the spread of your spittle to those around you. Also useful to a degree in preventing you from inhaling theirs. You can get an extremely high quality seal with these masks[^] - which are both inexpensive and easy to put on correctly. This will, in short order, reduce any resentment you have for not being "thanked for sharing" with others around you.

As far as I can tell the mask mandates contravene prior, peer reviewed studies showing masks outside medical situations do NOT stop airborne viruses
