Even back when we had a soapbox, when he found himself shyte-faced, his answer was just his often-used hiding place of being dismissive. To a varying (but considerable) degrees, it's the cult/conspiracy mentality. Anything that contradicts the dogma is party to the conspiracy and thus dismissed - eyes wired closed. Or, for some who think they've not been totally indoctrinated, they just try to ridicule what they don't agree with, then believe their own evasive position as being some equivalence of proof. If you look not only in the US, but throughout the world, COVID isn't the only deadly disease going around - the likely more dangerous one is in heads (and I don't mean a head-cold).

Oh, you misunderstand. When I hear "two sides of an issue", that means there's discussion with some semblance of rational thought on both sides. This issue, no. There's one side that just denies reality, listens to the right-wing marketing, and has no rational thought process justifying their position.

Oh, really? How about every red state treating this like the common cold? Never shutting down, or, now, opening up way too early with no mask mandates? The Republican mantra is "Profit at all costs". Opening up and freely letting the virus spread will only do two things. Kill more people and give the virus more and more opportunity to mutate, possibly into something the current vaccines cannot protect against. All so businesses can survive over people surviving. Texas has 7% of its population vaccinated and is opening up 100% next week like there's no chance of anyone getting infected.

I do find it interesting that how people see this virus tends to be the same as others in their political party. I hope someone does a serious study on that. I do find that interesting. Every state has had shutdowns and that has never happened for the cold, but I believe I get your point even through the hyperbole. Where I live, schools opened up in August 5 days a week and there have been no major issues. I have gone to the movie theaters and not had a problem. One of my kids works at a grocery store and has been in public since day one. We have gotten the virus but it was not big deal. Other people at my work have gotten it and recovered quickly. My point is, from everything I experience I can see that the virus is not as big of a deal as others are making it. Of course, that is not to say that some have not been impacted greatly. So, there are 2 sides. One side that thinks Covid is severe enough to shut everything down and hide until it is gone. And there might be some science to back that up. And then there is the other side, those that have actual experience (the best kind of science possible) to say that we can get back to normal and still be fine overall. Neither side is denying science. Both sides are picking the science that makes them feel more comfortable. But all this talk of the other side being idiots or denying science is just nonsense.

Oh look, more anecdotes that mean nothing on the larger scale, but make YOU feel better because it didn't directly impact YOU. If that's how you're going to play it, let me drop my anecdotes on you. In my social circles, 12 infected with 4 dead. My parents (in the age group with the highest mortality rate) got it from a couple of guys who had to be brought in for a plumbing problem that couldn't wait. My parents survived, but that was a scary couple of weeks.
