It's happening. We currently have 3 female software engineers on our team now. Two year's ago, it was zero. Give it time. EDIT: it also has to do with company hiring procedures and practice. Our company now tries to hire as diverse as possible, while hiring quality talent. A lot of companies have been doing this for years now, but some were/are a little slow on the up take.

During my career, I never found it to be an issue. In 1981, when I joined the company where I worked for over 20 years, it looked like a meeting of the UN. There were a reasonable number of women, probably at least to the extent that there were women graduates in Computer Science or Engineering. Hiring talent was always a challenge, so it would have been stupid to discriminate for irrelevant reasons. There were probably managers who did discriminate, but I never heard anyone suggest that doing so was sensible.

Although some people object, it's both grammatically and stylistically correct. And it avoids the who/whom problem, although those are more common. :)

My company is hiring as diverse as possible - without hiring quality talent, but to get their figures straight. Positive discrimination = Disaster.

Computer science is fun , it is challenging, it can help solve a lot of things in this world. Where are you ? We need a lot more honey-the-codewitch in this world on Code Project. Because people that don't work as hard to achieve a skill still feel like they're owed something by the rest of society. (And this viewpoint exists in all races and both genders). Furthermore, this viewpoint is taught and fostered by the modern American school system. Everybody wins a trophy, regardless of how well they actually do at something, so they go through life *expecting* to be treated equally (in terms of potential job suitability) when they're not actually equal. At some point, equality and skill set diverges into separate paths. Anyone can sweep standing water off a sidewalk, but not everyone can be a programmer, or even a grocery clerk.

My immediate boss has 3 women and 5 men in his team. He has a colleague who runs a team that is 100% women (including the team leader). This is not at all unusual in the development centre where I work. Perhaps the problem is that women have better things to do than waste their time on CodeProject? :) (I'll get my coat)

It will need to be evolved into. Just like in Chemistry - so few female chem majors, even at the undergraduate level. You can't hire what you can't find. And hiring just for the sake of some quota not only demeans the cause but does a disservice to the reputations of those who have earned their place. And this applies across all boundaries of gender, race, religion or physical limitations. Despite the current popular opinion that we need to compensate for (real or perceived) past injustices, remember that every slot given to the less deserving is taken from someone. Not a demographic but a genuine feeling person. Hiring for "old school ties" is a long-existent evil. So, too, is bigotry. The cure for both, if one does not want to continue the cycle via resentment, is to demand equal treatment for all.

Completely agree! We could use a little less testosterone and toxic masculinity in IT X| I don't doubt that the field as a whole would progress if it was a bit more mixed. Not sure what @code-witch has to do with it though, as he's just another dude* be it a bit... different** * We've all made that mistake when he first arrived, but the signs are there ** I'm talking about his single-line if-statements, of course

They're rising, but it is still seen as a boring job, while nurses save lives, teachers shape lives. There's a lot one can do that has more tangible result on the world. Converted one who wanted to join the army for a career; and in four, five years she managed to sail past me. Didn't help her much either. There's a lot of untapped potential out there, because we "boring" (meaning, predictable and reliable as a source of income, plus job security). Working in a stuffy office to achieve your Agile milestones is not going to tickle any girl.
