Ford plans to sell 100,000 hands-free driving vehicles by the end of the first year.[^] and that year is starting this year. I think there was a movie named for this, once: "Apocalypse Now" .

Somehow, SUV just doesn't lend itself to that.

They will introduce that as a "feature" in version 2.1...

I've been driving hands-free for over 20 years. This is nothing new. ;) It is interesting to me that society is so afraid to embrace self-driving cars even though if you take one second to stop and think about it, the roads will be many times safer with a computer driving the car rather than a human. But people resist change.

Given that self-driving cars can be fooled by lines painted on the road, terror is merited. I recently went through a construction area where I had to guess where the lane was, there were so many conflicting lines painted on the road. Self-driving vehicles will not really work until the software can handle all conditions and/or all roads have the markings 100% maintained. The vendors say the driver has to pay full attention and keep their hands on the wheel. If this is so, why do I need a self-driving car? This is not ready for prime time.

Correct. But it won't be long and it is coming.
