Windows GUI in 2005
-
I was reading an article by Paul DiLascia on MSDN ( http://www.microsoft.com/msj/defaultframe.asp?page=/msj/0198/coolmenu.htm ) And here is what he has to say about the GUI in 2005: "Soon, the world will catch up to my advanced taste—I predict that before the year 2005, Windows will revert to its 3.1 look." Cheers!

I actually liked the Windows 3.1 look. Sure, windows didn't have the now-familiar Close button but that to me was a good thing -- it wasn't easy to close things accidentally. Toolbar buttons actually looked like buttons and menus were always the topmost thing on a window, just below the title bar. One thing I do like about the Windows 95 interface is the variable-sized scrollbars which Windows 3.1 lacked for some reason. Also, the left-justified title bars I kinda like although I didn't mind it centered either. Regards, Alvaro

While, horror of all horrors, I like the new Windows XP interface (hey, I played with lego when I was young (alright, alright so I still do ;) ), so I have a certain feeling of deja-vu with XP) the one thing I wish it had was an easily accesible.. wait for it.. DOS prompt. I remember there was something called Windows Commander ages ago and at the bottom of the screen there was a text box which gave you quick and direct access to the command prompt. Does anybody know of a similar utility? Naturally it would be best if the command prompt just sat in the Start bar and could be expanded or collapsed easily. hmm might be a good coding project, no? regards, Paul Watson Cape Town, South Africa e: paulmwatson@email.com w: vergen.org

The closest feature I found is the address bar on the task bar. To enable it (this is on windows 2000), rightclick on the taskbar, select Toolbars and select Address. Enjoy! (2b || !2b)

Yup that is almost exactly what I am looking for, just need one that works on the command prompt now :) Thanks for reminding me about that address bar btw, it is quite helpful. regards, Paul Watson Cape Town, South Africa e: paulmwatson@email.com w: vergen.org
