I'm on the fence about it. There are two things I'd like to know. Who among you has installed it, and what do you think? Also, is the free upgrade to Windows 11 time limited? Do I have to get it while the getting is good, or can i sit on it for 3-6 months?

The one issue that is a major deal breaker for me is they have locked the taskbar to be at the bottom. I usually use two or three monitors and I refuse to waste that much real estate across all monitors for the taskbar. It is utterly absurd. I have monitors with 1200 lines because it's enough more than 1080 to make a difference to me. The other thing is with a vertical taskbar on left, it is always in the same place regardless of how many monitors I use at the moment. I know, these are likely to be trivial things to most people but they make a difference to me. As for the cost (or not), that is of little concern to me. I bought my last three copies of W10 from a reseller of OEM software and they cost me less than thirty bucks total for all three so if the free offer dries up I don't mind springing for it. However, that will only happen if the taskbar is unlocked OR I am absolutely required to have it and I can't imagine why that would be.

I can't stand multiple monitors so much that I sprang for a 4k TV to use instead. I always keep my taskbar on the bottom so it might not be so much of an issue for me. Thanks.

Ummm - virtual machine htcw. trust nothing from MS. You scare me some of the code $$%^^^%%^ you do. I suspect caffeine on your part. :) but OS updates from a brain damaged corp? virtual machine.

Installed, not overly impressed. I like the new setup (as in Control Panel) format, but that and rounded corners is about all I've noticed so far. I'd stick with 10 for now, especially if you have an AMD CPU. As far as I've heard, there isn't a time limit on the upgrade. I'm sure it will get louder and louder, but not switch to pay. I could have missed it though. I'm pretty much out of the loop these days.

That's true. I have 7TB online though, and a 2TB system drive, so it could take awhile.

You only need to backup the OS partition. Data is not needed for that and should be in a different backup process (at least IMHO).

Since you can still install Windows 11 with a license key for 7, I very much doubt the free upgrade will be over in 6 months. I've installed it and don't see anything negative so far. On the technical side of things anyway, the start menu got it's functionality limited for, I presume, no good reason. File History is gimped as well, this time I'm sure for no good reason. But if you don't see any reason to upgrade RIGHT NOW, just don't. Wait until all the first-product-launch kinks are ironed out. Windows 10 will stay in support until 2025 anyway. The main reason for me to upgrade early was WSLg, but with WSL (including g) becoming available through the store on Windows 10, there really is no reason to hurry.

When Win10 came out, I upgraded my laptop fairly quickly as I had Win8.1 on it, and hoped Win10 would be better. My experience was good, so a month later I upgraded my desktop to keep them consistent. Regarding Win11, I see no compelling reason to upgrade. I'm unimpressed with what I've read and have no enthusiasm for dealing with OS problems while Win11 shakes out. [I'm still using the same laptop and desktop; neither qualifies for Win11, so I'd have to buy new. However, if I had brand new hardware I'd still wait.] The question folks should ask themselves is, "Why do I want to upgrade to Win11?" If you have a reason that's compelling to you, do it. If not, do what I'm doing and make some popcorn ... :laugh:

I've been using it since first Dev Preview even for developing, and at this moment I've never had any problems so far. It is my main machine so I've been using it intensively. I do not think it is a BIG change from Win 10 but it's nice.

There is more nagging about Edge, and it is more difficult to switch default browsers. The start menu is a problem too, half is useful, the other half is populated with Microsoft's recommendation based on what you have been doing, i.e. AI. Last time I looked there were some rar files there, basically they are wasting prime real estate. Cannot change that. There is widgets for those who, well I don't know who the target audience is for that. And there is Msft news, which infests the notification area, Edge, and widgets. Plenty of opportunity to tell Msft what news you like, as to enhance the value of the product that is Mrs Witch to Microsoft And there is the taskbar, which is now feature limited by only allowing you to put it bottom left or bottom center (Apple mode). According to some Msft marketing dude Windows 11 puts you the user front and center and that is why the Taskbar is in the center too! Lots of complaints in the Feedback Hub, but so far nothing but blah blah from Msft as to when they are going to fix this. It all has a consumerish feel to it for me and for now I think the benefits are overshadowed by the overall sense of "we know better how you should be using your computer".

Greetings, I'll upgrade to Win 11 when this 5 year old laptop gives out. My AMD processor is not authorized for the upgrade at this point. The memory is good, the space requirement is good and TPM 2.0 is functional. And at the point that this laptop gives out. I'll get a better version of win 11 with the new laptop since most of the Win 11 bugs will be worked out by that point. The current laptop has a couple of upgrades .. 1 TB SSD Drive and 8GB memory boost to 16GB. My other laptop is getting an OS Change to Mint (Linux). Its a 2012 model with a I-5 processor with 8 GB memory and a 1TB hard drive.
Cegarman document code? If it's not intuitive, you're in the wrong field :D

I've been using Windows 11 since the first Insider build came out (I was also on the Windows 10 Insider channel for several years before that) and I've had no problems with it really. It's been as stable as Windows 10. The only BSOD I've seen is when I update my WSL1's packages (with `sudo apt --yes upgrade`) - something right at the end, after all the packages have upgraded causes it. Having said that, I might move to WSL2 instead. I don't like the new Explorer context menu. I *do* like the [Snap Layouts feature](https://www.howtogeek.com/740898/how-snap-works-in-windows-11/). I've not (so far) found too much else new that excites me. So - if my laptop wasn't able to run Windows 11 (and it shouldn't really - the processor is 'too old'...), I would be fine on Windows 10, but as it will run Windows 11, I will.

The main reason for me to upgrade is to stay current with my customer's experience and be able to test my desktop code on Windows 11. Since the two machines I use regularly do not have a supported CPU, I'll wait another year for a new company laptop. Windows 11 should be a more secure platform going forward, but I don't absolutely need it today. In another year or two I'm sure I'll have a new work laptop as the workplace requires more secure computing. My HP work laptop is over 5 years old. Two years ago I installed a Samsung M2 drive and relegated the spinning disk to bulk storage. It works just fine with the most recent version of Windows 10 21H1. But it will never support Windows 11. That said as it is it works very very well. Fast and stable. I have no complaints, other than resuming after undocking at times. My home machine is a 3 year old AMD ThreadRipper 1900X. I built the thing hoping it would easily last 10-years like my previous HP tower. It has worked well except for the watercoolers. But after a second failure I ended up getting a large thermal heatsink for the CPU and it works great. Runs cooler than the water based coolers ever did. I was shocked to find out that Windows 11 wouldn't support the processor. My ASROCK Taichi motherboard does support a ThreadRripper that is on the Win 11 approved list, but I will probably not bother until the CPU price comes down and Win 11 has been tuned.

I've installed on two non-critical / non-work computers (I don't recommend it on your primary computer atm). I would wait until Visual Studio 2022 & .NET 6 comes out at least in NOV. * AMD has performance bugs (I've read) [conspiracy is Intel may be making hardware deals with MS]. * Right-Click menu is a minor annoyance. * More ppl are reporting stability issues vs Win10. I have a feeling end of NOV is when MS will be making a bigger push on all their stuff.

Don't be fooled as we were with Windows Vista. Back then, XP was good enough for me, until after Win 7 came along.

In my experience it is very stable running the Android Studio IDE. Haven't tried Visual Studio yet. I want to stick out my neck and say it's OK for development work. Surfing the web can get a little annoying.

It is ok for development work apart from the reduced organisational flexibility of the start screen (ok on a laptop or pad in order to pretend to be an ipad, but useless for a development desktop).
