I am still stuck in the 20th century, despite being a programmer! :o Never talked to my machines in plain English! But watching those youtube show where they make fun of "ok, google" or "alexa, order a large pizza", I wonder, is that really a common occurrence?

I do speak to a single machine in plain Italian - my GPS navigator has a voice command functionality and it is very, very, very useful. It allows me to set destinations without stopping the car or taking my eyes off the road (except for brief instants). It's also more accurate when giving it complex directions (i.e. addresses) rather than its pre-built commands ("go home", "abort trip", "go to work").

Just tried it at the office yesterday. Since this week I'm renting a place with another company and business partner. He ordered some OK Google device and connected it to his big ass 75" TV. First thing I said, OK Google, open CornHub* dot com. Joke's on me, Google responded "Welcome back Sander, would you like to continue watching [redacted]?" :sigh: * It wasn't actually Corn. Also, true story so far and it didn't work.

How often did that thing send you to Mamamiogoddammit?

I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats. His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.

A handful. Most of the times it sends me where it should, through a path that shouldn't even exist. Next navigator I'll buy a trucker edition, so it will skip "roads" by name but not real roads. And yes, sometimes it wishes for me to pass through a wall or cut through a fast lane with duble contiguous road lines. Driving with the GPS is a skill in itself, thoug I find it useful because it helps me to concentrate on the road rather than reviewing the planned path 10 thousand times per second - only to miss a roundabout and still getting lost.

I find it handy for a few things, like having it turn on the TV when my hands are full. I actually used it a few days ago to reorder something (popcorn, a necessity in our house) that I kept forgetting to order. It's also good at math when I can't find the calculator or I am too lazy to pick it up. But mostly it just sits there, unless I need a good fart sound...

Sometimes talking to machines is the only way I get an intelligent answer. I actually had a coworker tell me one time that he didn't worry when I talked to the computers. It's when they answered and I was the only one who understood the answer that worried him.

My daughter gave me an Alexa device a couple of years ago and I still have not turned it on or set it up. The Cell phone company dnt me a new phone for free, as they are switching to 5G only and my 3G phone will stop working. In my world, phones are for making and receiving phone calls only. Not texting, watching movies, ordering pizza, shopping, or reading a restaurant menu. :-O

I am still stuck in the 20th century, despite being a programmer! :o Never talked to my machines in plain English! But watching those youtube show where they make fun of "ok, google" or "alexa, order a large pizza", I wonder, is that really a common occurrence?

Our DISH satellite system will let you use Google assistant. I calculated that it would take me 12 weeks to read the license agreement; 16 weeks if I slept. “No thank you” The basic search feature is probably better anyway.
