Most teenagers in Israel need WhatsApp to stay in contact with their friends, receive school messages, etc. Anything else - meh. (That does not stop them from loading the poor devices with every game under the sun, and surfing the internet until the devices overheat...)

She told the teachers to send SMS if they want her to know things...

As in the rest of the world. I don't see how Israel is different here. If they want to keep contact, they can send sms or call using a normal phone. No discussions about using phones during dinner. If you at the table, they'll listen instead of playing a game. IMHO, that's an advantage in life

My 'landline' phone is a 80+ year old dial phone... from the outside... inside I 'upgraded' it to a cellphone using some Arduino and shields...

Yup. They don't make them any more like the British did. :)

My second daughter (almost 15) started the school a bit differently... She put aside her smartphone (a fairly new Samsung A52) and picked a Nokia 215 we had in the drawer...

That would be the "business" phone then.

She is smart - but that's not the point... How many teenagers do you know who willingly gives up on smartphone? In my experience she is the very first...

And replace it with a phone that can't be (easily) tracked? Plenty.

I was surprised as well. My daughter was forbidden to be on Social Media. She started university at 14 and got an iPhone when she aced all her classes. The SURPRISE was that A TEACHER Demanded they get twitter accounts and follow the teacher for their assignments. I had a few words with the teacher when I found out (A fact my daughter tried to hide from me). She never posted anything, but she should NEVER have been forced to create that account (IMHO). We had a standing rule my daughter hated (until she was 18, I WOULD open her phone, and scroll through and read whatever was on her phone... as my job as her parent)... Anyways, she did well. Her biggest time waster is "Evil 2048", which she plays with her thumb, without even looking at the screen... LOL.
