Get in the Search bar and type "Windows " and "Windows Insider Program settings" should show up in the results. Click that. If there's a button that says "Get started", thank your lucky stars you're not in it.

Curious. Are you in the Windows Insider program?

You don't have to be in the insider program to receive "preview" updates. However, these always come down as "optional" updates. I run my own Windows Server Update Service and the nightly cleanup scripts auto-decline anything with the word "Preview" in them.

My computer would like to restart, apparently, because of "Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1..." An update preview? What is that?! :O I don't want the preview, I only want the real update!!

Do you have the KB number? (It seems to be a wrongly named - nothing preview about it as it cumulates previous updates and adds nothing new)

KB5017389 is a strange one - it was released on the insider channel on the 22th of September, and now once more on the normal channel on the 30th of September, but with different version number of W11... KB5017271 is seems to be only a naming problem - it was released to the insider at the 7th of June and now after 3+ months to the normal, which seems to be all right...

Same here. And Windows 11 rebooted by itself over night. The next day, I deactivated all windows updates and Windows defender. I need to cool down for a while.

It's a release improvement. In order to not cause mayhem and havoc when doing major updates, Microsoft is not pushing all updates to everyone at once. You have the option to opt-in to the update, if you feel like doing that. Or you can ignore it until it gets installed automatically, with a slight chance of some more polish. Why do you even care? :P

This. I run my own little WSUS server too, and keep seeing (and declining) those previews. What do you use for WSUS scripting? Years ago had come across a third-party PS module, but I believe nowadays WSUS has its own module (from MS, I mean, not third-party). Is that what you're using? Would you mind sharing your script? I didn't want to commit to a script that would only work with a third-party module, and these days I just can't find the time and motivation to start looking into it (like, from scratch - I'd be happy to adapt an existing script as a starting point, for my own purposes)

Past experience? This is Microsoft software we're talking about. But then, you may be onto something - is there really any difference nowadays between MS previews and other releases?

I am certainly not an insider, and I have never signed up for it. Yet I got these preview updates too.
