[Check for No Update] WinZip button

I made the mistake of purchasing a WinZip license once, many many years ago. I then spent years trying to get them to stop sending me spam emails promoting the latest version, despite repeatedly opting out of all email. In the end, I just had to block the entire domain. Since 7-Zip[^] is free, I don't understand why anyone would ever pay for a different zipping tool.

I, too, use 7-Zip. And am proud to say I’m one of the handful of people who paid (donated) for WinRAR. I had WinZip many years ago.

In WinZip today I clicked on "Check for Update" which displayed a window which announced "Your Software is out of date" and displayed an advertisement for an "Upgrade" to purchase another Corel WinZip product a "WinZip Suite" w/ no means to update to be seen. I sent a nasty note to their support. Their explanation was the reason the advertisement was presented is because WinZip is programmed to do so!? Of course I again sent a nasty response to that one. Upon inquiring further I learned there is no "Update" other than by purchase. I sent another nasty note to support requesting they inform Corel President I will never purchase a Corel product as this one is so deceitful. Furthermore after above unpleasantries upon opening web browser I am confronted w/ this www.dropbox.com[^] :rolleyes: :omg: :wtf: :mad::confused::~ X| :suss:
So out there someone actually bought WinZIP and WinRAR licenses. Huh, I thought it was a legend.

I haven't used WinZip/7Zip in years. You guys do know that basic zipping/unzipping is built right into Windows Explorer, right?

Standard Zip is worse than 7z, Windows manages Zip quite badly and the format itself isn't good. Also 7zip is cross platform.

The only reason I've ever needed to use WinZip is when I had the need to create a self-extracting archive. I don't believe 7zip does that. Other than that, one use case, I really prefer 7zip.

Are people still using zip files ? In what kind of use case ?
I've been creating some NuGet packages, which are essentially zip files. After creating a NuGet package, I usually unzip (using 7-zip, as I don't have to change the extension first) to verify the file contents. Similar for Office docs if I am doing anything programattic with them.

Just wanted to mention that 7-zip has an API, so it should be possible to create some sort of app to automate some level of your workflow... Not used it myself, but it might be of use for what you need.

Very simple, 7Zip to the rescue... ;-) I haven't used WinZIP in at least a decade...

Thank you for directing me to 7-Zip. It supports a "@listfile" argument which no doubt is a batch file. Precisely what I need. I still require the ability to see the archive contents and the heirarchy therein and the ability to move things around within the archive via cut copy paste etc. just as one can in Windows Explorer. To my surprise 7-Zip does not seem to provide this even though it duplicates much of this functionality for source files on permanent storage. The archive itself remains hidden from view. So I guess I'm stuck w/ WinZip. The horror.
If you right click on a *.7zip file, then you get a 7-zip context menu. In that sub-menu there is an option to "Open Archive". You can also open that archiving program directly from c:\Program Files\7-zip\7zFM.exe (FM = file manager). Once you have the archive open, you can do what you want with the files within. I was not aware of WinRAR. Downloaded today and will investigate. Thank You. I have doubts though as I prefer a GUI into the archive which offers the same functionality of Explorer which WinZip almost does. 7-Zip does not and I have doubts re/ same of WinRAR but we'll see. One of my future fantasy projects is write a Zipper of my preference. I can't decide on a name though. Maybe EZZip, or SimpleZip or ZimpleZip or ZipeedeedoodaZip and give it away for a mere cup of coffee of course w/ forever free updates/upgrades and responsive bug fixes feature requests and put WinZip out of business. :)

My use case most of the time is to send Visual Studio solutions/projects I never know which to call it to support for repro.

Thank You for informing me of WinRAR. I just now investigated and was surprised at its poor GUI unless of course I am utilizing it incorrectly. I.e. to wit upon Add'ing a file to archive WinRAR assumes a name of the archive as same as that added. That is OK as it permits setting the name and location of the archive but it does so for each file added even though I wish to add to the same archive. The result is for each added file it is necessary to Browse to the archive location. This is absurd. How the heck do you utilize WinRAR upon adding a number of files. Do you browse to the archive for each one. I await your Kind and Helpful reply. -Best PS I am stunned that software of version 6 has such a poor GUI unless of course I am doing something incorrectly. Unfortunately WinZip will have to be my preferred Zipper until at least I write Zipeedeedoodah.Zip

Bought before years a WinRAR life license. It always supported Zip files, to read and create. RAR format compression was always better than on Zip. Has a nice integration with Explorer popup menu, and offer to make own profiles/settings by task as you want. Now since short it supports the new RAR5 format. It was a wery good inwestment for me.

Weird. WinRar has fairly decent Windows drag and drop integration. I don't think I understand how you're trying to use it. The nice thing about WinRar is that they have a command line interface so you can do batch files if you like as well. Secondarily, the latest DotNet releases have built in zip functionality so you could automate something using that rather quickly if you like.
