Do not buy Das keyboards
-
I have several, going back to the original with blank keys. They were a great alternative to the ubiquitous rubber-dome keyboards back then, but the world is full of mechanical keyboards now. There's nothing particularly special about Das these days. These days I mostly use hot-swappable Keychrons, and customize them. At the end of the day, a mechanical keyboard is just a platform for switches and keycaps. It's the switches and keycaps that really matter.
Having owned mechanical keyboards I don't agree with your assessment of Das. Omron Gamma Zulu switches feel crisper to me than the Cherries I've tried. The keycaps are mildly lit, which is a nice feature at night without being overbearing - they're not lit at the base, only the symbol itself. And build quality matters. This keyboard doesn't flex. It also has NKRO and individual scanning which is important for gamers and fast typists.

I broke down week before last and ordered one based on your recommendation. Went back and forth on the 5QS and the 4Q, because I thought I wanted clickier keys. And the Amazon reviews are not great on the 5QS. But in the end I trusted you. It came in last Friday. Only had a chance to play with it for about 45 minutes since then, as I went out of town. Very nice! Feels like my typing sped up with it. For the fun of it I put it on 'cycle colors'. I wish you could slow down the transition speed. Picky, I know!

I'm glad you like it. I'd hate to think I gave a bad recommendation. I still love my Das5QS. Don't care about the haters.

It's not the newest model Das, but it has one cable and two USB ports on the keyboard. Das Keyboard 4 Pro

I like mine as well. My only criticism is the Num Lock LED is seriously bright: when I turn the PC on in the morning it still glares in my eyes every damn time.

Care to share the details? I have a Chromebox and a Linux Mint box. Each has their own KB & mouse with each computer having one USB dongle to drive the KB & mouse. I’d love to share one KB & mouse but prefer wireless for everything (I freakin hate cables).

Seriously, this thing is bright: I have it running through a KVM (so I can manage my NAS with the same monitor, KB, and mouse) so unless I turn off the switch as well, it glows all night - and it paints a bright blue circle on the ceiling!

Wow! I keep my PC away from sleeping quarters for noise, so I've never noticed that effect. The KVM is a good idea, though!

You should be able to use a KVM with wireless mouse and wireless keyboard, but you would have a single cable from the KVM switch to each computer. Might not be worth it if you move stuff around a lot.
Yeah, not a fan of KVMs. I'm told some don't work so well with wireless KBs/mice and it's kind of hit or miss. Also not a fan of Bluetooth KBs/mice (too much lag). What I'd like is a KB / mouse combo that supports 2 USB unified receivers. Pop a USB into each computer and use a button on the KB / mouse to switch between receivers. I just can't find anything that explicitly says they can do that.

Yup. Bought mine in 2014. Wired, Cherry MX Brown switches. Love it. Kinda wish sometimes it'd wear out so I could buy buy a backlit model, but looks like I'll be using this one for a lot longer.

If you want mechanical and ergonomic, take a look at the Feker Alice 80. I have an Alice 80 and love it. I had to add a numeric keypad to go along side it. I see there is a newer model, the Feker Alice 98 that includes the keypad and a full set of function keys. I'd probably go for that today, but like my current Alice 80 too much to make a change.
thanks for recommending the Feker . i am sorry to say it is not for me . i looked at the Alice 98 . i found no [End] [Pause/Break] nearby [Del] all of which i rely on . thanks again cheerios

Nice review! I've tried trackballs in the past and hated them, but everyone gets a choice. I rushed out and bought an expensive touchpad back when they were a novel add-on; hated that, too. Oh well, there's no pleasing some people.

As a follow-up - Yes, I fully love typing on this thing now! Part of me remembers the old IBM keyboards, and thinks they come close. But a larger part thinks I'm mis-remembering, because this keyboard absolutely rocks! Even though I'm not a fast keyboardist (~60 wpm), I feel faster on it. Thanks!
