Hi all how do you name your servers at work? some use characters from books (lord of the rings for example) what do you use? bryce --- Publitor, making Pubmed easy. http://www.sohocode.com/publitor

At the uni I was at, all the servers were named after characters and stuff from the bible: cain, abel, moses, ark etc...

I've had a couple of naming conventions - currently it's based around the XBox game Halo. My desktop is "cortana" and my server is "guiltyspark" :-D. -- Ian Darling

I didn't really answer your question the first time around, so here goes again :-O I name my servers and workstations after cars e.g. mine is Ferrari, there's a Corvette, there used to be a Porsche etc... Paul ;)

at my last job, we named them after terminal illnesses (anthrax, ebola, hunta, etc). we figured that if we named the servers after the nastier viri, computer-based viri would not come sniffing around. my workgroup at home is "SkyNET". ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

We once named our servers planet names (with the dev server being named Sun as everything revolves around it :rolleyes: ). Then each department was a continent, with each pc in that department taking a name from that continent :)

I thought it was pretty good for the following reasons: 1) Blowing up stuff 2) 2 really hot chicks 3) More blowing up stuff 4) The computer stuff actually looked believable. Padded with 0's For example, my deaktop at work is MBLPW2KP0432 MBL = Laptop P = Production system W2KP = Windows 2k Pro 0432 = I was the 432 system put online in that class Geeky I know, but it seems to work and it keep sthings consistent I have asked before about what happens when one machine is used for mutliple tasks and I was told that does not happen. Now that I think of it, I have not seen that happen so far.

I'm a geek, but everytime I repave my laptop I use a different Star Trek ship name...right now I'm on Valiant (a Defiant class vessel, named so after the USS Defiant). The IT guys were baffled one day when the found Defiant in Network Neighborhood. :-D

So I settled for the CPU speed, which I have no problem associating with the machine (obviously). My machines are now NCC700, NCC733, NCC2200, and NCC266 (my old laptop). Of course this is really only useful for a small LAN (home in this particular case). Then I suppose if I ever get more than one machine running at the same speed, I could go for NCC2200-A, B, C... :-)
