I've had a couple of naming conventions - currently it's based around the XBox game Halo. My desktop is "cortana" and my server is "guiltyspark" :-D. -- Ian Darling

I didn't really answer your question the first time around, so here goes again :-O I name my servers and workstations after cars e.g. mine is Ferrari, there's a Corvette, there used to be a Porsche etc... Paul ;)

The reverse is even scarier: The bible could be some kind of Star Wars thing.

No, actually. I can't think of a single pr0n star's name... The last XXX video I watched was called 'The Cheerleaders', and it broke my heart. The girl I loved all through High School had, that same day, announced to me that she'd won a place on the cheerleading team.

at my last job, we named them after terminal illnesses (anthrax, ebola, hunta, etc). we figured that if we named the servers after the nastier viri, computer-based viri would not come sniffing around. my workgroup at home is "SkyNET". ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

We once named our servers planet names (with the dev server being named Sun as everything revolves around it  ). Then each department was a continent, with each pc in that department taking a name from that continent :)

Now that I think of it, I have not seen that happen so far.

I'm a geek, but everytime I repave my laptop I use a different Star Trek ship name...right now I'm on Valiant (a Defiant class vessel, named so after the USS Defiant). The IT guys were baffled one day when the found Defiant in Network Neighborhood. :-D

                                  > Star Trek ship name I used that scheme for a while, but I kept forgetting which machine corresponded to which ship name, so that turned out to be useless. So I settled for the CPU speed, which I have no problem associating with the machine (obviously). My machines are now NCC700, NCC733, NCC2200, and NCC266 (my old laptop). Of course this is really only useful for a small LAN (home in this particular case). Then I suppose if I ever get more than one machine running at the same speed, I could go for NCC2200-A, B, C... :-)

Yep thats the one. But he wasn't actually a roomate, he lived in the room directly across the hall. He used to have a DNS entry with his friends domain name (which must have expired now) but he quickly put a stop to that when he realized that several of my friends and I set up port forwarding on all of our firewalls to him. Matt Newman

Usually we rely on either behavorial characteristics (Evil Web 2) or beverage enhanced stupidity (SQL-o-matic). cheers, Chris Maunder

I thought Evil 2 died a while back, from the thread it mentioned something about holy water and a priest :~ But if there is Evil Webserver 2 is there an Evil Webserver 1? If so why is it never mention when you speek of evil webservers? :P Matt Newman
