I quit FB about 2 years ago and don't miss them a bit. I wasn't on any of the others so there is no problem there! Got to be very confrontational, if you don't agree with me I'll unfriend you.

What's the problem with the trash taking itself out? Twitter? I have the theory that every tweet sent has the potential to reduce IQ. The people who post frequently (and vehemently) on Twitter (X) are strong evidence in favor this theory, although many didn't have a lot to start with. And the individual posts should be called "twits", not "tweets", as "twit" is a far more fitting name.

When I turned 50 FB decided I am a pervert and started sending me ads to make it with 20 year old girls. I shared a picture of people dressed in pumpkins and got a ban for nudity but I get ads for insane s3x toys. My wife threw me out 3 years ago and I held it together on the basis I visit every few weeks. I use FB to talk to her and used it this morning to apply to join a band. I stopped using FB seriously 10 years ago when they allowed a far right wing gang to stalk and threaten my kids. I just kind of prod at it now
I have a collection of screenshots from Walmart ads of adult toys that would make a "insert person of choice here" blush. I think it's partly my fault though. I started screwing with their ad algorithms by clicking on everything to see what would happen. My latest is checking the Walmart price of Sriracha daily as it shows up in my feed to watch the prices and how that changes. Hint, up on the weekends, down during the week. Sidenote, I never shop at Walmart.

I've only ever used FB but I have a very small friends list (less than 50) which consists solely of family and people I am in-person friends with. Everything I do and post is "private to friends only". We use it strictly to keep in touch with each other and share what's going on. We keep it rather civilized and avoid the subjects that we know, from our personal contact, tend to annoy each other. That served me well for many years, but the past 6 months or so ... FB is getting way too aggressive in the ads they keep throwing in my feed. The content itself isn't bad, and I see why they think I might like this s*$t, given my activity but ... enough already. I can always tell when my "don't show me this crap" response to every ad starts to wear off every month or so. 3 weeks of a reasonable feed and then a week of having to block all the crap. Unfortunately, this is the simplest way to keep in touch with the folks who have moved away.

I loved Lego as a kid, and keep reading about adults still using them as a hobby. I've often thought to myself, wouldn't it be fun if I went back to that myself.

...but now you've singlehandedly convinced me not to go down that path. :-) Years ago I used to play The Sims 2, not for the gameplay, but because of the building opportunities the game engine presented. I had houses that had such design complexity they pushed the game, I believe, to its limits, but even then, I thought it was too restrictive. I could never get into Sims 3, and never tried Sims 4. "Real" home building software is just too complex for my liking. I think there's a real need for some creative outlet. Lego might fulfill that, to some extent, but it just gets crazy expensive if you're serious about it. I've seen some software decades ago that let you work with virtual Lego, so to speak, but found the controls to be way too difficult to be useful.

Not yet, but I'm about to. Pr0n sites are far more entertaining anyway, and occasionally educational. ;)

Is anyone else giving up on social media. Twitter permanently banned me for being politely left wing, and Facebook has me on constant bans because they push things I don't agree with onto my feed and I try to politely discuss them from time to time. Add a constantly flow of fake accounts trying to romance scam me, and I'm pretty much done
I deleted my Twitter account in early 2021 (or late 2020?). Never had Facebook, but had Instagram - deleted it at the same time. (Facebook does too much tracking, hence the Insta deletion.) I have a Tumblr account where I keep a number of quotes I’ve liked over the years. Can’t say I like the energy many people give off on those platforms. While there are some good ideas and thoughts put out there, there’s just too much idiocy and anger.

Go figure. From my perspective, it allows silly nonsense and over-sensitivity and shuns anyone that has an opposing opinion. Before its recent backlash it got really bad. They've backed off a little. At least we agree on this. The question is... who's to blame for this? Please don't say Trump though; we're supposed to be smarter than the brainwashing TV. I think a lot of this stems from us spending less time outside and talking to other humans, as simple as that may seem.

Tribel.com seems to be mainly left wing, fwiw. I'm enjoying mastodon a lot, but picking a home server aligned to one of your interests can be important. If you go with one of the huge servers your local feed will be plastered with lots of things you aren't interested in. You can join several servers for different interests, and transfer your account if you find one you like more. I'm still on fb for a couple groups, and friends that are still on there, but mastodon is an entirely different world. No algorithm pushing ads and clickbait, no romance scam friend requests. People tend to have interesting discussions instead of just posting memes. Another thing to look at is the moderation policy on different servers. The good news is that you're likely to be dealing with a real human instead of an idiot algorithm.

I haven't exactly quit twitter/X or Facebook but I have gone back to using as I saw them in the beginning. Facebook is a modernish phonebook. Twitter/X is little more than a broadcasted SMS service. So, if people truly want to communicate with me, there's always a way to ask for my phone number in person, and you have the option of calling, texting or setting up a one to one meeting at a cafe for a serious discussion (or facetime me if you're more than 600 km away by land) As for news...I have a wealth of online newspapers at my disposal.

I've actively avoided social media. I have enough useless activities (games :) )of my own to want to waste time on social media. Making comments on a couple different forums is about as social as I get on line.

Same. CP is probably the one site where I'm the most active. I also have an account on Discord, but I only use it to talk to very specific people.

I used to be active on NetNews (aka. Usenet). I didn't give it up; it was more like NetNews itself gave up ... I read a while ago about someone trying to bring it back to life, but I doubt that they will succeed. In my youth, several of my friends (and myself) used the mail service - the original, dead trees based one - to exchange opinions, telling about our activities and such, photocopied to all the others. That died out, too. I think I was the last one to mail out anything to the group, but as the reactions ceased, or I got a two-line private (not to the group) response to a three page letter, I quit. When dead tree mail was replaced with email, we used mailing lists within a few social groups for a few more years. We had increasing problems with some group members knowing nothing about the things we were discussing, invitation to meatings and such. When we ran into those 'deaf' ones (which were increasing in numbers) and asked, the common response was 'I almost never open my email any more - could you rather send me an SMS?' Of course some wanted us to use FB. One of my work mates felt such responsibility for my 'social' life that since I was not on FB, he all the time tried to bring me into the real life, dragging med over to his screen to show me all his new FB postings, and the comments from all his friends. Years ago, people tried to drag me into Second Life. I was somewhat fascinated by their technology: Considering the typical internet line speeds at the time, they managed to create an graphic, interactive UI of impressing quality. The 'social' aspects failed to fascinate me to any significant degree. As far as I know, SL still exists, but I never got around to joining it. Now, FB seems to be on the decline; I would be coming too late to the party. Over the years, there has been a constant flow of reports of censorship, political manipulation and spying on everybody's private lives that has kept me at a distance. I honestly haven't been attracted to any 'social', public net forum since the days of NetNews. My main reason for following CP is to pick up programming and computer info. I do recognize the signatures of several of the active posters, but I do not consider The Lounge a place for meeting 'friends' in any way that resembles meeting real friends in real, physical life.

I tried mastodon. There's no conflict but it's just not interesting. I have a few friends I've stuck with between accounts who post interesting things and drive good discussion. I don't see how you can avoid romance scams unless you just never make public posts.

I like Pi-Hole a lot, even if only for the fact that all devices on my network go through it, so even phones and tablets (provided you set them up to specify it as a preferred DNS) get all the crap blocked. And a single point for defining the blacklist/whitelist.

Weak people can't handle the truth about their shortcomings. They get butthurt too easy. Nothing more. Nothing less.
