Odd Phobias

How many different phobias are recognized by the APA[^]? I know it's a lot, but I don't know the actual number. In terms of unrecognized phobias, there must be billions. If you ever get the chance, take a look at a list of phobias. Some of them are funny. Take any person, place, or thing, translate it into a Latin term, and append "phobia" to it. Whatever it is, I bet it exists. Google it and see what you get. I was just reading through a list of phobias. Here are a few rather interesting ones: Catoptrophobia is the fear of mirrors. Are people who suffer from this phobia still afraid of mirrors in the dark? Wouldn't that just be something like photophobia? I'm guessing that the term exists, but I don't know. It would be the fear of light. Could you imagine the horror of seeing a disco ball? I bet there's even a phobia specific to disco balls. I don't think the word "disco" has a Latin translation. Ancient Rome probably didn't have many nightclubs. Here's a good one. Its meaning is obvious. Cyberphobia is the fear of computers. Do we have any members who suffer from cyberphobia, here? I wonder if any men suffer from Lockiophobia. It's the fear of childbirth. Megalophobia is an odd one. It's the fear of large things. WTF is that all about? Size is entirely relative. That's almost as terrifying as a moving forklift! Oh, no. I think I'm having a panic attack. I gotta get some fresh air.

Not really a phobia, but I have developed an associative disorder over the last decade or so...uncontrollable swearing triggered by my cellphone ringtone/notification alert. :laugh: It's always someone needing something...or a bored, retired, broke brother-in-law for a daily therapy session. X|

No, it's real, and the voices in my head hold a regular vote on our sanity (majority passes so far). When I was little, being around large things like electrical towers and tall bridges was terrifying. We visited Natural Bridge State Park[^] and it was all I could do to walk across the middle, staring down at my feet. I think it might be related to acrophobia (fear of heights). Neither of them are debilitating for me now. In my case calling them a phobia probably isn't valid from a clinical point of view.

Chronomentrophobia is the fear of clocks, watches, or timepieces. Octophobia is the fear of the number 8. What would happen if you suffered from both phobias? Whenever it's 8:00 you'd freak out, run around the room knocking over furniture, foaming at the mouth, screaming uncontrollably while trying to hide from your clock. Trauma on that level would most certainly lead to PTSD.

Oh, wow. Now I understand what it would be like. That's really interesting. Perceptions of the world at a time when you're very young put these phobias into better perspective. I'm still not fond of forklifts, but when I was 5, forklifts scared me.

Could you imagine if you had both naclophobia AND catoptrophobia? Whenever you enter your bathroom, it's dark, so you get scared, panic, and turn on the light. Once you turn on the light, you see the bathroom mirror. You're overcome with sheer terror. You quickly turn the bathroom light off. But then it goes dark again! More terror! Turn on the light, quick! OMG, it's that ****ing mirror again! ...it must be awful :(

Ah, I think I've found a phobia that has no term! When I was in kindergarten, I had a fear of dog food. Yes, dog food itself was what frightened me. I think I may have had a transient fear of dogs themselves, but it's the dog food that I remember being afraid of. As to why? I have no explanation. OK, so we need to think up a term for this phobia. I can't find anything using Google. Not even close to it. I'm thinking of the term "cibus", which is Latin for the word food is a good fit. The term "canis" is Latin for the word, dog. Let's see. How about Caniscibusophobia? Yeah, I like that one. I can now say that I am a proud survivor of caniscibusophobia. :cool:
