I knew it was a motor swap! I helped him with it. The motor was originally a 390, but his mechanic hogged out the cylinders and put 427 pistons in it. Radical overbore (.100, most overbores go .030 -.060). Was prone to overheating as well. He couldn't afford a true 427 block. BTW, the original motor in his car was a 351W. The intake was a factory dual carb intake, just not for that year car. I don't remember if it was the low rise or medium rise intake. It's been 20 years... His car was the baddest of the Fords in my area. He just spent a pile of time working on it and never got to run it much... My other "hero" at the time was a mechanic with a '71 Mach 1, with a modified 351 Cleveland. This guy would just show up, kinda like Clint Eastwood (insert whistle here), destroy the bad guys (read chevy) and disappear into the night. ** Sigh ** I miss being 21 again... Geez, next I'm gonna get maudlin about cruizin and hangin out in .... Oh well. "It takes a minimum of redesign to turn a crucifix into a pogo stick"

I had friends with scary-fast fords - a 72 fastback with a 460/4 spd, two guys that each owned a factory stock 427 SOHC Thunderbolt Fairlane, a couple of guys with Talladega Torinos, a crap-load of guys with Boss 302's, Boss 429's, Sheby's, Cobras (big and small blocks), and even a few that had GT-40's. We even had a couple of guys with v-8 Pintos and supercharged V-8 Mustang-2's, and one guy with a Ford 427 side-oiler stuffed into a '68 Camaro, and another guy witha Boss 429 in a Ford Esquire station wagon. I ran with a VERY fast crowd. Those were the days when speed was measured in cubic inches and mechanical ability instead of bolt-on pre-fab goodies and decals. Before I sold my 72 to Get married, I had put a 460 built from a shop in Memphis (associated with Crane Cams), a Beefed up C6 Transmission, and tubbed out with 6 pt roll cage and 4.56 gears. My one run down a local 8th mile track here was awful, because the tires spun the full 8th mile. However, at that point, It was no longer fun to play with, cuz I ran out of money in midstream, and some bad decisions were made (460 with cobbled together motor mounts to make it fit, couldn't find the right motor mounts). Engine in wrong, heat causing the starter to lock up, etc, etc. Now I can hop up my 2000GT again, but I won't be going that radical. I dig the guy with the Boss 429 Wagon. Reminds me of my other dream ride, a guy in CarCraft magazine dropped a 427SOHC into a '61 Galaxy Starliner. What a rocket. (What a SLED!). Now that is one good looking Mustang. It's nothing like the utter design failure produced today. Am I the only one that believes the Mustang has become uglier through the years? -- I am on fire. Do you need a light?
The 60's and 70's Shelby editions really kick ass!! They were biult with 289ci. HiPo engines and also the bog dog 428ci. Cobra Jet , and the 429ci Super Cobra Jet. I saw a GT 350H that was made for Hertz Rent A Car that was restored, an elderly couple was driving it in Torrance CA. I'm hoping that someday Ford will re-produce these Muscle Mustangs, and offer them at a reasonable price. Tony

A handful of 71 Mach 1's were equpped with the scj motor. Not all were dragpack. The Mach 1's went all the way to 1973. More accurately, Shelby's last new car was made for the 69 model year. the 70 models were simply left over 69's with the trim updated and had the vin numbers changed.
