Anyone remember the Maxtor 40GB USB 2.0 external HDD I got the other week? The company I work for have decided to give me the money back for it. They say this is because I will be using while doing work for them (though I will be using it more for personal use). Now I'm not one to say no and I should use this money towards registering my car. But we all know that isn't going to happen. So I have decided I should get them to buy me another computer related item to add to the collection I have bought in the past few months (which is more than I have bought in the past few years). So I am of course asking for recommendations from the lurkers of Code Poject. I have AUD$150.00 to play with, this probably equates to something you Yanks can buy for USD$80-100.00. - Maxtor 120GB 8MB cache HDD
- 256MB USB 1.1 flash drive
- 8 port switch
- USB 2.0 card
- FireWire card
- Cat-5 crimper and punch-down tool

USB 2.0 memory stick. For $80 U.S. you can probably get 256MB. I've got a 128MB stick I bought six months ago. It's the most useful computer gizmo I've bought in a long time. I end up sneaker-netting stuff to a lot of machines that aren't on the company network, and the stick is a hell of a lot more convenient than burning CD-R's just for quick patches or debugging.

You don't get much speed increase from USB2.0 anyway, IME - I upgraded from a 64Mb USB1.1 drive to a 512Mb USB2.0 drive (the USB2 drive was only about £4 more than USB1.1)& while the read speeds up by a factor of maybe 2, writing's only very slightly faster - I guess the flash memory write cycle is the limiting factor (I seem to remember a write cycle time of a microsecond or so from when I was at university).
