No, I'm not talking about a little dude who followed a tall guy around an island saying "Yes boss". (Age check) :) I'm curious, how many of you all have tattoo's. I've been curious about getting one for a really long time. Now that I'm married, have 2 sons and am hoping to have a daughter for number three...I was looking into getting one. I've been looking into asian characters, and different phrases in japanese and/or chinese writing. They are very cool looking. For Example, the term "Father and Son" is two characters, and could easily be changed to father son and daughter. I've also been taking TaeKwonDo so, korean characters would have a double meaning. I have two - a lifesize black widow spider :cool: on my right shoulder blade and a meaningless symbol on my right shoulder. (They're both on the right to counter-balance the ring in my left nostril ;)) I've never regretted getting them done and a t-shirt easily hides both of them if necessary. What you're talking about is small, unobtrusive and actually quite romantic (is that the right word?!). I say go for it, after all, "It's better to regret what you have done, that what you have not done". Don't know who said that, but it's true :) Important: Eat something before you get it done. You don't want your blood-sugar bottoming out at the wrong time... :~ :-O

Sure, I appreciate that. But why? Not that I'm looking for a pro-tattoo or con-tattoo argument here. I just really want many different people's (from different cultures) opinions. Do you feel that a woman with a small rose on her ankle, hidden from view by pants or nylons is ugly? When you look at someone with a very tastefully done tattoo on their upper arm, are you immediately brought to stereotypes of beer swilling, fighting, biker types? Not being argumentative here, just asking. :) I mean, why else would I ask this question to hundreds of thousands of people just like me (tech types, programmers and the like)? I like the natural look of the body (especially the female body, but I digress. :-D) Tattoos mess with that. They necessarily draw attention to themselves; they do not just blend into the background, they exist to draw attention and be noticed. They just screw up the natural appearance of the body. Tattoos are a major turn-off for me. Not necessarily fatal, if I like the person well enough otherwise, but it is a definite negative. I have a Thai Buddhist dragon (Naga) that wraps around my upper left arm and love it. I got it done in Chiang Mai (in Thailand), a place that I have a lot of love for and took a lot of time finding an artist who's style I like. I also did the original drawing myself since I couldn't think of anything worse than just flicking through a book of pre-done images. /taka senses a marketing opportunity If you're looking for an Asian character, how about the one at the top of this page[^]? By itself, it means harmony and unity. It's the first character of Awasu, which means to connect or join things together and also Aikido[^] (a martial art) which means to join together the spirit and the way. :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh: How cool would that be! I'm really curious about another related thing: Why do some people find tattoos so atractive (at least, on their own body)? What compels you to go and draw things on your own body? I'm really indifferent at tattoos, I don't find them particularly attractive nor repulsive. IMHO, they are not a wise thing to do because they are permanent and some people have serious misconceptions about tattoos. I hope that you have money because it’s necessary to be practical. And I hope that at least once a year you put some money in front of you and say "you are mine" just to make clear who owns who. - Victor Hugo
Hmm. Interesting question and while this may seem completely off-topic I was talking to a friend today who was asking "why do people put quotes after their posts in message boards". For some reason I tend to think the answer to that and tattoos may be related. Or maybe I just had one too many martini's... cheers, Chris Maunder

I have no tatoos, never will; I have enough scars given to me by life as it is ... beyond that point I wanted to tell you my wife and I have a close friend that believes he contacted Hepatitis from the needle used when he got a tatoo. Now, you can say that "I'll go a clean place" all you want, he thought he had, and the truth is "you never know". Perhaps you should consider something like Henna/Mehndi Tatoos (these are painted on using special inks that do not come off right away, but, from what I understand about them, will not require expensive surgery to remove). Regardless, please keep these things in mind ... somethings in life just aren't worth it; this would be one of those things. My two cents, D. :|

Here's why I won't get them: :bob: They look ugly. :bob: They're expensive to remove if you change your mind. :bob: They fade as you get older, and look uglier. :bob: The tattoo artist could screw up. (Altohugh I say this just becuase i've been reading the Jump Start comic lately... :-D ) :bob: From a professional standpoint, if it is someplace obvious, it will make it tougher to get a job. Lots of people here have tattos. They help to identify the gang members, and serve to chronicle visits to the Greybar Hotel. The women use them to cover needle marks, or to help draw attention away from their obesity and lack of teeth. Very attractive...

I have also lived some years in Spain, and there people don't accept that you speak bad spanish. I usually compensate by speaking loud and accusing people of being stupid because they don't understand me. It usually works quite well. -jhaga on non-native languages

Here's my take on it, but this only applies to me - it's your choice. You only get one skin to wear your whole life. All in all, it's a durable garment, regenerating itself frequently to stay reasonably fresh and new... but if it gets stained, it's a bitch to get clean again. Decent leather jackets, on the other hand, are easily to replace. But then, i can't even go a year on one hairstyle.
