Hmm. Interesting question and while this may seem completely off-topic I was talking to a friend today who was asking "why do people put quotes after their posts in message boards". For some reason I tend to think the answer to that and tattoos may be related. Or maybe I just had one too many martini's... cheers, Chris Maunder

I've been curious about getting one for a really long time. Now that I'm married, have 2 sons and am hoping to have a daughter for number three...I was looking into getting one. I've been looking into asian characters, and different phrases in japanese and/or chinese writing. They are very cool looking. For Example, the term "Father and Son" is two characters, and could easily be changed to father son and daughter. I've also been taking TaeKwonDo so, korean characters would have a double meaning. I have no tatoos, never will; I have enough scars given to me by life as it is ... beyond that point I wanted to tell you my wife and I have a close friend that believes he contacted Hepatitis from the needle used when he got a tatoo. Now, you can say that "I'll go a clean place" all you want, he thought he had, and the truth is "you never know". Perhaps you should consider something like Henna/Mehndi Tatoos (these are painted on using special inks that do not come off right away, but, from what I understand about them, will not require expensive surgery to remove). Regardless, please keep these things in mind ... somethings in life just aren't worth it; this would be one of those things. My two cents, D. :|

Here's why I won't get them: :bob: They look ugly. :bob: They're expensive to remove if you change your mind. :bob: They fade as you get older, and look uglier. :bob: The tattoo artist could screw up. (Altohugh I say this just becuase i've been reading the Jump Start comic lately... :-D ) :bob: From a professional standpoint, if it is someplace obvious, it will make it tougher to get a job. I have also lived some years in Spain, and there people don't accept that you speak bad spanish. I usually compensate by speaking loud and accusing people of being stupid because they don't understand me. It usually works quite well. -jhaga on non-native languages

Here's my take on it, but this only applies to me - it's your choice. You only get one skin to wear your whole life. All in all, it's a durable garment, regenerating itself frequently to stay reasonably fresh and new... but if it gets stained, it's a bitch to get clean again. Decent leather jackets, on the other hand, are easily to replace. But then, i can't even go a year on one hairstyle.

When I had mine done, they take took a sort of photocopy of the design and imprinted it on my arm. Similar to those temporary tattos for kids. Anyway, once the design is on your arm, all they have to do is color it in, which anyone with a steady hand can do. The temporary dye just washes off with water. I have thought about getting one but have recently gone right off the idea. They have become much too "common" for my tastes. There once was a time where having a tattoo was a statement but in many places now, NOT having a tattoo is a statement.
