Hi, I'm thinking about buying a notebook for development (Vs.NET + SQL SERVER). I'm wondering if you have any advices/models to suggest me? :) Cheers, - xico -

I just bought a Toshiba S507: http://www.outpost.com/product/3715526[^] and I love it. The wide screen is sooo cool, it supports a second monitor, has a hyperthreaded P4 at 2.8Ghz, 4 USB ports, firewire, built in wireless LAN + 10/100 Ethernet, 512MB. Except, for some reason, whether it's because of the sunken keyboard, the deeper palm rest area, or the position of the mouse pad (which is off-center left--I think center would have been better), or just my desk/chair height... anyways, I'm developing a numbness in both hands using the keyboard, so I've switched to a Microsoft natural keyboard so I can figure out what's going on. This time around, I kept a log of things I installed and removed when I got the machine. I got tired of missing various important programs. Here's the install list so far: XP ProXP Pro SP 1a MSN 6.0 VS.NET 2002 VS.NET 2003 MSDN July 2003 MapPoint Visio Enterprise Edition 2003 Avant Browser 7.0.5.2 FreeVCS Sticky Notes (stickies) Office XP Pro with FrontPage Install Shield WS FTP Pro Synergy Norton Antivirus Corporate Version Project 2002 SQL Server 2000 Developer Edition GRBackPro ver 5.4 NUnit and I uninstalled: AOL AT&T WorldNet Service Norton AV 2003 Quicken 2003 Microsoft Works 7.0 NAV home edition I hate all the stuff these machines come with. Well, I shall shut up now! :-D I guess I was waiting for the opportunity to, umm... GLOAT! Marc Latest AAL Article My blog Join my forum!

      >VS.NET 2002 >VS.NET 2003 Out of interest, why do you need both?

P.S. - I've had two Dell's that have suffered evil fates after 2 years. A Dell 7500 has a broken hinge, so now it's a desktop, and the Inspiron 8200 has a crapped out memory management unit--it only boots when it's warm, so I dare not turn it off (both need to go into repair some point soon!) I have several apps I'm maintaining in C++ that used Sun's STL version, not liking Microsoft's (HP's) version back from the VS 4.2 days. Sadly, iostreams, which was depricated in 7.0 is now totally unsupported in VS 2003, and I haven't gotten around to migrating the Microsoft's STL, or any other STL. Plus, being an editor, it's useful to have VS 2002 around to test programs that people submit which are written for that environment. Marc Latest AAL Article My blog Join my forum!

which brings up a good point. When you get a laptop, it's worth the money to get the in home service contract. Maybe it's just that I'm tougher on computers than most people, but it has served me well in the past.

I'll have to agree with the service plan. I only buy Dells and the service is great. I had a fan crap out, called them up, sent it overnight (at their expense) and they sent it back overnight. Missed a total of one day, but what was so great about it was the fact that they replaced the DVD because it made a weird noise when they used it and they replaced the screen because the latch would get stuck sometimes. It was great. When I got the thing back i thought I had a new computer.

I really like my Dell Inspiron 8500. Lovely big screen (big enough even for VS.NET and all it's annoying windows). Michael 'War is at best barbarism...Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, more vengeance, more desolation. War is hell.' - General William Sherman, 1879

I just got a new Toshiba Tecra M1 from cdw.com with the following: 1.6GHz Mobile Intel Pentium M processor w/Centrino, 512MB RAM, 40GB hard drive, 24X10X24 CD-RW/8X DVD-ROM, 56K, 10/100/1000 Ethernet, Intel WiFi 802.11b, Windows XP Pro and a 14.1" SXGA+ active-matrix display I've installed VS 2003, and it runs much faster than my older Thinkpad. I had purchased a Dell Latitude D600, but ended up returning it because it ran way too hot and the keyboard sucked. I've owned many Tecra's in the past and they have great build quality and the M1 is pretty light (~6 lbs.). The only thing I don't like is the windows key is located at the top right of the keyboard, but if you use an external keyboard most of the time it's not a problem. Jason

You get a glidepad AND a nipple. I prefer the nipple. :-D
