Hey I'm a New Zealand Citizen, who's been living in Toronto, Canada since he was three. I'm seriously considering moving back to New Zealand, for the better climate, and because I think the lifestyle will be more in tune with what I enjoy. Are there any other Kiwi CPians out there who can tell me about - the software industry over there? - Are software people in demand? - Could I have a rewarding career without living in Auckland? - I'm into scuba, motorbiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, mountaineering, snowboarding, sailing, windsurfing... basically anything involving the outdoors. Which cities/towns would you recommend, for career and lifestyle? - Do you know of any good websites for real estate or job posting databases? - Any other thoughts? Adam ;P Why is the phrase "It's none of my business" always followed by "BUT..." ;P

It's over 10 years since I was in Vancouver but I loved it! If I was going to live in North America, that's where I would go. Although I've heard it's changed quite a lot in recent years. Oddly enough, I found Toronto to be amazingly like Melbourne, Australia. I found it quite boring :-)

It's over 10 years since I was in Vancouver but I loved it! If I was going to live in North America, that's where I would go. Although I've heard it's changed quite a lot in recent years. Oddly enough, I found Toronto to be amazingly like Melbourne, Australia. I found it quite boring :-)

I went to Grande Prairie Alberta one time. It's on the edge of the prairies, lot's of fields as far as the eye can see. Their city slogan on their welcome sign says "Forestry capital of canada"!

There is some (reputable) international organization that rates cities around the world for cost of living, standard of living, safety, climate, etc. And Melbourne topped the list twice and usually ranked highly the other times. Nevertheless, I'd be glad to get out here. Too long in one place and I get :ants in my pants:... :-(

I did like the idea of Vancover but, err, doesn't the climate suck? http://www.climate.weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca [^] Compared to Toronto (my banchmark) it seems like Vancover has - mild and very wet winters - mild summers (it never gets above 30C, and it only gets above 20C for half as many days as Toronto) - 40% more days with rain, and 70% more rain in mm annually I'm not keen on the Toronto climate either (long, cold winters get you down) but at least our summers are nice. Vancouver climate seems like a step down. Can no-one offer me advice on New Zealand? Adam ;P Why is the phrase "It's none of my business" always followed by "BUT..." ;P

Vancouver Island on the other hand is pretty built up at the south end along the highway, but is still nice and peaceful as long as you go mid to north Vancouver Island which is exactly where I happen to be. Lot's of acreages with big trees and wild animals. We're on 5 acres of land surrounded by trees and at the back of the property is a steep drop off to a river estuary with the river just behind that. All we ever see are deer and lot's of birds. I can't imagine living in the city (any city) every again. Although I know that there are many cool reasons to do so.

We'll actually B.C. has areas that mirror every single climate in the world: There is a desert in southwestern B.C., Taiga to the north, tropical rainforest on the west coast, the Rocky mountains etc etc. Here on Vancouver Island where I am which is about 5 miles inland from the ocean it's been mostly above 30C all summer and the days of rain since early June I could probably count on one hand, but Vancouver is of course on the ocean and that levels the temperature pretty much. If you like hot, you go inland a bit, if you like temperate, you live by the ocean. If you like cold you live up in the mountains etc. And yes it does rain in the winter a lot here, but I actually love that and it doesn't stop me from going out mountain biking etc. In fact, mountain biking is improved immeasurably when your covered in mud the whole time. Also we live right near a moutain with a ski resort so any time in the winter I can drive up out of the rain and into the snow and go skiing. I know that a lot of people that move here from Toronto are about ready to slit their wrists at the end of their first winter here with all the rain and clouds, but that's exactly what I love about winters here.
