yes, but the REALLY scarry part that you DON'T know about is that the poster of this message ... has also 'disappeared' Microsoft likes to refer to this type of activity as "Managed Garbage Collection" ... (can't believe I just said that) D.

On Sept. 5, the following query was posted in MS's 'vc.ide_general' newsgroup, from a user calling himself '__stdcall'. Hello I would like to design my own project template and add it to the list in the "Projects" tab of the File/New command of VC++ 6.0, just like "Win32 Application" and so on. I think it should be possible but how ? Thanks for advice The following response appeared: Look at the documentation for 'Custom App Wizards'. In VS6, this is a simple, straightforward process - if you base the custom wizard on an existing project, it can be as simple as working your way through a two or three step wizard process - just point the AppWizard Wizard at the directory containing your template project and it does the rest. In VS.NET, where all things are better, this capability (as best I can tell at this point) has been removed. Instead, you're supposed to go through some barely documented, unusable process where you need to manually assemble lists (using XML, I believe) of the files you want to include in the custom wizard. Yup. Big step forward, as in all things DOT NET. This entire thread has now disappeared from the newsgroup server. The content is still there - if you have a machine to which the header had already been downloaded, clicking on the header will call up the messages. Re-synching (as when you re-connect to the newsgroup) will cause the message headers to disappear from the list. Apparently, even if response content is technically accurate, a lack of bovine enthusiasm for Billy-boy's latest mess will be sufficient to warrant removal. Perhaps it is better to preface all MS newsgroup messages with something like 'DOT NET is good. DOT NET is great. Anyone who doesn't say so incurs MS's hate.' Hail Billy-boy. Hail Billy-boy. Hail Billy-boy.

I found it on google. It's time to step back from the edge. Microsoft didn't do anything (this time). ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 "You won't like me when I'm angry..." - Dr. Bruce Banner Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

What a joke. I've personally written 7 new app wizards for VS.NET. Some were fancy COM based things with custom UIs, some were entirely JScript driven, and one used the funky HTML interface stuff (I didn't like that much). It's all completely documented in the VS.NET help. (look up 'vsdir' in the help). This removed post was most likely posted by someone who couldn't instantly figure out how to do it in VS7, got pissed, stopped thinking, and started crying about how 'M$ $ucks'. In my opinion, the moderators did the right thing when they removed that post. Its content was entirely misleading, uselessly mocking, and would do nothing but throw people off if they came looking for info on how to do the custom app wizards. -- Russell Morris "So, broccoli, mother says you're good for me... but I'm afraid I'm no good for you!" - Stewy

If the newsgroup is publicly accessible, everything that's posted there can be found on google. Since it's a *microsoft* owned/operated newsgroup, they can do what they want. I would be really surprised to find out that MS actively monitors the group, or would find anything worthy of forcing the deletion of the thread. Maybe your news reader app sucks. If it's Outlook, I think the answer to your question lies there.

But MS does suck, and .NET is .CRAP, and the latest sorry excuse for documentation is about as complete as NASA's space shuttle safety procedures. I don't see anything wrong with the content of the message. I heard somewhere that the seats in the shuttle had this label sewn onto the horizontal seat cushion: "In case of in-flight emergency, tuck head here and kiss your ass goodbye." ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 "You won't like me when I'm angry..." - Dr. Bruce Banner Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

Agreed. It is documented though I had a hard time finding it at first. Writing ATL Object Wizards for VS2k3 was worse (but not impossible) though.

That happens on my newsgroup reader as well (Netscape One - CAn't remember the title) Messages will disappear, but will be present in GoogleGroups. Sometimes they are blank - sometimes the header disappears. Some of them can be quite recent, a few hours old. Interestingly one that I noticed was about a guy asking about whether or not GPS receivers give off strong enough "reflected" signals for spooks to pick up and know the location of anyone with an active GPSR. It was on Google Groups but the entire thread was absent from the newsgroup header listing. Before you ask - yes I am a conspiracy buff and proud of it. :wtf::wtf::~ :suss::eek::sigh:
