This sucks!

I just spend 4 hours debugging my self-update code to remotly download all patches, update application plus it updates remote databases run export/import and apply sql scripts. It took 2 weeks to write and it has been running w/o glich downloading updates to end customers desktops for months. Until today. All hell broke loose, app was GPFing left and right... I always test my code and test & assert 99.99% of pointers. I tried it on my system with success, but new deployment = crash & burn. It turns out new "InstallShield" expert managed to deploy most files in improved "brian.dll.dll", "settings.xml.xml" or "document.doc.doc" format. Now with window option show file extensions disabled, they looked exactly as real: "settings.xml", even had the right icons etc. Ok, I should have expected this from InstallShield "expert"... Still wasted 4 hours of my life. Why is MS playing games and hidding extensions? Whats is wrong with extensions anyway? Why is this better or frendlier for user to see folder with 5 files all named setup and different icons, instead of setup.exe, setup.dll, setup.ini, etc...? Brian

I've always thought the "feature" to hide extensions was stupid, and I will turn it off any time I install an OS. But e-mail virus writers *love* it! They will routinely include files in e-mails that are named something like, "message.txt.vbs", so the user thinks it's "message.txt" (oh, it's just a text file, safe to read), but it really is a VB script word virus or something. If your nose runs and your feet smell, then you're built upside down.

I also turn that "feature" off the moment I sit down at a new computer. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

As do I, and probably most other developers. ;)

Well, Microsoft is definitely guilty of hiding file extensions by default; a feature which most of us don't like, and which caused Brian to spend more time on the problem than he would have otherwise. Regards, Alvaro
Hey! It compiles! Ship it.

I turn off "Show Web contents in folders", "hide extensions", "hide system files", "hide hidden files and folders", turn on "full path in adress bar", "title bar", "show compressed files and folders in this beautiful blue", set the current folder to "Details" view, then click "Show folders like current one" when I get to use some stranger's explorer.

is all a real programmer needs. And the command shell doesn't lie about file extensions, either. (and "doskey dir=dir /a $*" makes things even more explicit). ;P -

Bah!!! After I turn on extensions, I just turn on the "show B:omg::omg:BS" option and I don't care anymore. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.
Hey could you write an article on how to do this - I can't seem to find this option... ¡El diablo está en mis pantalones! ¡Mire, mire! Real Mentats use only 100% pure, unfooled around with Sapho Juice(tm)! SELECT * FROM User WHERE Clue > 0 0 rows returned
