I just spend 4 hours debugging my self-update code to remotly download all patches, update application plus it updates remote databases run export/import and apply sql scripts. It took 2 weeks to write and it has been running w/o glich downloading updates to end customers desktops for months. Until today. All hell broke loose, app was GPFing left and right... I always test my code and test & assert 99.99% of pointers. I tried it on my system with success, but new deployment = crash & burn. It turns out new "InstallShield" expert managed to deploy most files in improved "brian.dll.dll", "settings.xml.xml" or "document.doc.doc" format. Now with window option show file extensions disabled, they looked exactly as real: "settings.xml", even had the right icons etc. Ok, I should have expected this from InstallShield "expert"... Still wasted 4 hours of my life. Why is MS playing games and hidding extensions? Whats is wrong with extensions anyway? Why is this better or frendlier for user to see folder with 5 files all named setup and different icons, instead of setup.exe, setup.dll, setup.ini, etc...? Brian

Well, Microsoft is definitely guilty of hiding file extensions by default; a feature which most of us don't like, and which caused Brian to spend more time on the problem than he would have otherwise. Regards, Alvaro

I turn off "Show Web contents in folders", "hide extensions", "hide system files", "hide hidden files and folders", turn on "full path in adress bar", "title bar", "show compressed files and folders in this beautiful blue", set the current folder to "Details" view, then click "Show folders like current one" when I get to use some stranger's explorer.

Ctrl-R, cmd<enter>is all a real programmer needs. And the command shell doesn't lie about file extensions, either. (and "doskey dir=dir /a $*" makes things even more explicit). ;P -

Only wimps use Explorer!
Ctrl-R, cmd<enter>is all a real programmer needs. And the command shell doesn't lie about file extensions, either. (and "doskey dir=dir /a $*" makes things even more explicit). ;PWIMPS! dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/console bs=1M bc= It's the only way to browse Win folders (Ok, so it might require an extra UN*X installation but what the heck, I need the detail!).
