I also turn that "feature" off the moment I sit down at a new computer. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Only wimps use Explorer! Ctrl-R, cmd<enter> is all a real programmer needs. And the command shell doesn't lie about file extensions, either. (and "doskey dir=dir /a $*" makes things even more explicit). ;P

WIMPS! dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/dev/console bs=1M bc= It's the only way to browse Win folders (Ok, so it might require an extra UN*X installation but what the heck, I need the detail!).

Another blind, knee-jerk defense of everything MS, no matter how obviously stupid. Baaa-aa-aaah!

Bah!!! After I turn on extensions, I just turn on the "show B:omg::omg:BS" option and I don't care anymore. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Well, Microsoft is definitely guilty of hiding file extensions by default; a feature which most of us don't like, and which caused Brian to spend more time on the problem than he would have otherwise. Regards, Alvaro

Most people probably couldn't give a monkeys crap about what the file extension is or what it does, and they're more numerous. To put it another way, should Microsoft gear their user interfaces/software for developers or end users? >Maybe a better question would be, "Why doesn't your code log run-time errors so you can track down problems like this?" Please, I have run-time logging in every program I write. Normally I do not allow exceptions to propagate to the top level, UI is always protected at all cost. My apps do not GPF ever! This was really something I did not expect ( most files to have double extensions ). In fact I think this was funny, I was given a print screen with hidden double extensions and comparing it to real files. Brian

I turn off "Show Web contents in folders", "hide extensions", "hide system files", "hide hidden files and folders", turn on "full path in adress bar", "title bar", "show compressed files and folders in this beautiful blue", set the current folder to "Details" view, then click "Show folders like current one" when I get to use some stranger's explorer.

                        > I turn off [...long list deleted...] Seriously...back on 95, I reversed maybe 2 out of the 5 possible view options...then with 98 I reversed 6 out of the 10...then on 2K I reversed 10 of the 12...and now on XP I reverse about 19 out of the 20 options. When Longhorn comes out, I predict I'm gonna reverse every option and checkbox without even looking at them.
